Can't Locate Church - Eastbourne, Sussex or area

Postby DianaCanada » Fri Aug 18, 2017 8:45 pm

I recently came across the funeral notice of a relative in the Eastbourne (Sussex) Gazette of 13 October 1948. John Oliver had died at the age of 90, at the home of his eldest son in Lewes, Sussex. The funeral took place at St. George’s Church where John had been a caretaker and verger (in the 1939 Register his wife Agnes is listed as a part time church caretaker when they were living in Eastbourne). John spent most of his adult life in Eastbourne, born in 1858 in Warbleton, Sussex, the son of Stephen Carley Oliver and Hannah Hollands.

I cannot find a St. George’s Church in Eastbourne or in Lewes. Perhaps the church no longer exists or has changed its name? Any help appreciated.

Thank you for this. I too thought this might be the church but the funeral notice mentioned the officiating clergyman who had a very distinctive name. I found his marriage in FreeBMD so looks like it was an Anglican church.

Thank you! Good to have this information.
Surprised to see so many from villages and towns where my ancestors lived. Looks like the parish church my parents were married still stands (Telscombe).

I would strongly recommend bookmarking GenUKI which would have provided the answer in seconds.

Good idea, Peter! I haven't visited that website in ages. It's bookmarked now!
