Letter to return to relative: Ashton, Marden, Kenny

Years ago I bought a letter on Ebay with hopes of returning it to a family member. Perhaps someone reading this will be related to one of the people mentioned below.

The letter was postmarked 12 Apr 1946, Bethnal Green, E2. It was sent to Mrs. E.L. Marden, 15, Sumner Street, Newton Centre (sic) 19, MASS, USA. No return address on envelope but the letter was typed on a letterhead for Walters Tobacco Co. Ltd., 15/21 Orsman Road, London, N1 and was signed “Bert” with A.S. Ashton signed to the left of that. It begins “Dear Holly” and it is actually a very interesting letter, as Bert talks about post-war Britain.

It also appears that Bert had proposed to Holly, as on the envelope someone has written “Cis suggested I be Bert’s second wife, I replied that I wouldn’t do because I wouldn’t shine shoes!”. Bert reassured Holly that modern English women did not have to shine their husband’s shoes! He also mentions Marjorie in the letter, who must be connected to Holly somehow – am not sure which of these women would be Mrs. Marden.

I believe I have found Bert – an Albert R. Ashton is living at 59 Crown Lane, East Barnet, Hertfordshire on the 1939 register. He was born 16 Feb 1886 and his wife Mary E. b. 18 Oct 1890. Mary’s second initial looks very close to a “C” but I believe it is an “E”. Albert is listed as a Tobacco Manufacturer, so I believe this is the right man. The only Albert R. Ashton registered in the first two quarters of 1886 is an Albert Rowland Ashton in the district of Holborn.

I found only one marriage from 1906 to 1939 of an Albert R. Ashton and that was to a Mary E. Kenny in Newport M district in Dec Q 1911. Interestingly, there are five listings there instead of the usual four – there is also one for a Cissy Kenny. Is she the same person as the “Cis” mentioned the envelope, I wonder.

I found Albert in the 1911 census boarding in Newport, Monmouthshire working as an engineer (fitter) for a tobacco company. In 1901 he is with his parents (Albert and Eliza) in Walthamstow, Essex.
If you think this letter is from or to a family member, please let me know and I will send it on.

Thank you, ianbee, for all you found, I somehow missed what you found in the 1940 U.S. census.
Holly may indeed be a nickname, not very common as a given name, certainly not until after WWII, and not a stretch for an Olive to be nicknamed Holly - just checked her birthdate, just before Christmas, so that might be another clue.
Hoping a family member spots all this and is able to confirm and claim the letter!
Albert Ashton mentions in the letter that the food situation was worse in 1946 that it had been during the War. People were still queuing to get items.
Albert does mention "we" in the letter so now I am not so sure his wife Mary was dead when he wrote the letter, after checking the BMD indexes. It might just have been a little joke between them!
