Martha Griffiths - brick wall

Postby cheerily » Thu Aug 10, 2017 11:05 am

I'm trying to locate Martha Griffiths, born approximately 1850/51. She married Edward James Hughes in April 1876 at Chester aged 25. Her father is given as Henry Griffiths. On the 1881 census, under her married name, her place of birth is given as "Holt, Cheshire". She is living in Sandycroft, Wales. On the 1891 & 1901 census she is a widow & place of birth is "Malpas, Cheshire". She is living at 3 Allens Court, Chester. I'm can't find her on the 1861 or 1871 census & wondered if anyone here can help? Any advice gratefully received.

I've had no luck finding Martha with a father Henry. In 1881 she says she was born Holt, Flintshire, and later, she says Malpas, Cheshire. There isn't a Holt in Flintshire, but there's one in Denbighshire, about 7 miles from Chester and 6 from Malpas. In 1851, there's a Martha Griffiths living with Robert Simon and family in Holt, Denbighshire, all born there.
Robert Simon 48, ag lab, wife Ellen 50, son Robert 13, dau Ellen 8, and Martha Griffiths aged 2. She's listed with no relationship, just entered as "nursery" (or nursing?) I wonder if that's a variation on 'nurse child' - a child being looked after in the absence of its parents?
Wrexham Registration District covered Holt, and there are a couple of possible birth registrations: 1) Dec Q 1848, Martha Griffiths, Wrexham 27 246, mother's maiden name Blaker. 2)Jun Q 1850, Martha Griffiths, Wrexham 27 306, mother's maiden name Ashton.
I think this could be Martha in 1861: Allington, Wrexham, Denbighshire, household of Simon Faulknor, b1833, farmer, wife Jane, two young children, and Martha Griffiths, b1849 in Rossett, Denbighshire (3 miles from Holt), servant/nursegirl.
Is this her in 1871? Heaton Norris, Stockport, Cheshire, household of Elizabeth Fisher, 38, widow, born Manchester. Martha Griffiths, unm, 23 (1848), servant, b North Wales.

Thanks. I did see the entry on the 1851 census but wasn't sure. Checked at the front of census book & it states Wrexham Union & Malpas District so that would explain Malpas connection. I'll get a copy of the 1848 birth certificate & go from there.

Just for interest - on that 1848 birth entry for Martha Griffiths, mother's maiden name is given as 'Blaker' which doesn't seem to come up on Denbighshire censuses, but Blake does, so it might be a transcription error. Do let us know what the certificate says.

The 1848 cert gives the mother as per the attached photo & the father as Edward. It does appear to say Blaker. I obtained another cert from 1850 & the father on that cert is also Edward. The birthplace for Martha is Ruabon.
