Emily Turner (my great grand aunt)

Postby pforkes » Sat Aug 05, 2017 11:14 pm

Emily Turner was born on 25th match, 1866, in Little Cornard, Suffolk. Her parents were James Turner and Sarah Cant.

The 1871 census has her living at home with her parents and siblings.

The 1881 does not have her living with her parents and I have not found her (yet).

On 31 March, 1889, she gave birth to Sidney Tokeley Turner, in Risbridge, Surrey.

The 1891 census has Sidney (her son) living with her parents, but she (Emily) is not living with them, and there after I have not been able to find her.

Can anyone help me to find either Emily Turner or her son (Sidney)?

Thanks,

Peter

I haven't yet been able to find Emily or Sidney after the dates you give. However, I did see on freebmd that there is also a Lizzie Tokeley Turner registered in the same quarter as Sidney with the same reference . Did Emily have twins? I cannot find Lizzie on the 1891 census nor a death for her so perhaps she was with Emily? I did rummage a bit and found that there are quite a lot of Tokeley families in that part of Suffolk and Essex so perhaps Emily ran off with one of them. The name Tokeley as a middle name is almost certainly an indicator of the father's surname. I haven't found a possible marriage either for Emily.
Incidentally, I found different spellings in transcripts which do not help. Familysearch has Toksley and Ancestry has Sokley so you may have to be quite imaginative with your search.

I have now found a possible burial for Turner (no name) on 3rd September 1898 - which may explain why no more details can be found - at Haverhill, Risbridge. There is an Emily Turner, general servant aged 17yrs in Haverhill on the 1881 census. Ages were not always accurate especially if someone else was completing the census return/or transfer error. Hope that is some help for you.

I have sent off for this birth certificate and I suspect that you are right that Emily had twins.

Thanks you for your help.

The entry found by brunes08 in 1881 looks like your Emily - High Street, Haverhill, Suffolk, household of Elizabeth Wright, 69, widow. Emily Turner, 17, general domestic servant, b Little Cornard.

In 1901, it looks as if Emily's brother Frederick Turner (born c1873) is a road foreman in Lewisham, London, with wife Blanche, dau Ada, son ?Felix, brother Percy (1878) an engineer's labourer, and mother Catherine Turner, widow, b1842, Sudbury, Suffolk, but no Sidney.

Walter Tokley was in the army. Whenever he joined up may rule him in or out as the father of Sidney and Lizzie. (His service record is on findmypast). I don't think he will be with Emily Turner in 1891 though!
Here's his baptism in Great Henny in 1868 (image is Bishops Transcript)

Walter seems to have married Emma Silvester in 1902 and they are in Little Cornard in 1911.
It may be worthwhile for pforkes to look further into that Tokeley/Tokley family.

So today, Lizzie Tokeley Turner's birth certificate arrived and it had something unusual and unexpected on it. Actually, it had two unusual things on it.

Firstly (and least significant) is that this is the first birth certificate to have the time of birth on it (actually, her twin brother's birth certificate also has a time of birth on it, but I had not noticed).

Secondly (and this is surprising) the father's name is written on it and it is crossed out! The father's name is Walter William Tokeley!

There is a Walter William Tokeley born in Sudbury in Q2 1968 in Sudbury (mother's maiden name Carter). Also, a Walter William Tokeley was baptized on 12th July, Great Henney, Essex.

Today has been a very interesting day for me when it comes to researching my family tree. A very interesting day.
