I know nothing about France but I do know that the LDS have a Wiki that can be excellent.

If no-one else has any suggestions, then I suggest you go to https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/France_Genealogy and start reading. I get lost in French jurisdictional types but it may be that the Rhône department is part of what you need - https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Rh%C3%B4ne,_France_Genealogy - that page mentions Lyon.

Are you having problems because you don't understand French or because you don't know more details of her birth? When I used this site a year or two back I was looking for Protestant records which are their own category in the section for Parish Registers, (Paroisse) and was able to find the records wanted.

If you have tried all the search options - a problem I can see because of the many registration districts and then many parishes within Lyon - then why not send a polite email to the contact person which you will find on the left hand side of the page after clicking through to "Accéder aux registres".

If Adelaide's parents were married in Lyon, then you can easily do a marriage search which will give you both parents names, the commune (town) and sub-division, which you could then use as a basis for searching for her birth.

Bit of background for the rest of us.
Adelaide married Harold Godwin in Lambeth in Dec qtr 1877 (1d 855)
If Yvonne has the marriage certificate she will have her father's name and occupation.
They seem to have had a son (Herbert) born abroad a year or two after the marriage.
Harold and Adelaide Godwin are easily found in the census from 1881 onwards

Is it at all possible that she was a servant in Greatford in Lincolnshire in 1871? Head of household, William Henry Peacock. Piece 3310 folio 159 page 20

Her death
June 1939 Bournemouth 2b 986
Godwin, Adelaide Vionnet
age 87

What a pity she didn't cling on to the end of September. Then we would have an exact date of birth for her from the 1939 Register.

Her full name was Adelaide Francoise Vionnet and, according to my friend (who is a descendant) she was born on 06 January 1852 in Lyon. Her father was Jean Vionnet. The family story says they left France to escape the Franco-Prussian conflict.

She married Herbert Godwin on 16 December 1877 and seems to have been living in Ledbury at the time.

Our problem is that we want to find out more about her birth family but, so far, have failed to find a birth certificate. We do have the marriage certificate.

There are two marriages for a Jean Vionnet in the Lyon area between 1840 and 1851 - both in the commune of La Croix-Rousse: a Jean Pierre Vionnet to Begnine Lyon on 9/5/1846 and a Jean Baptiste Vionnet to Jeanne Gourmand on 1/2/1849. If this link works, it should take you to the 1852 "baptmes et naissances" (baptisms and births) for La Croix-Rousse.

http://www.fondsenligne.archives-lyon.f ... su&page=1#

I've looked through the first few pages but not found a baptism for an Adelaide.

Hope this helps
