What Year was this photo taken

Postby gdraper » Thu Jul 27, 2017 4:55 pm

Hi this is a photo of one of my grandmother's brothers either William George Blyth born 1884 died 1st July 1916 on the Somme or his younger sibling George Blyth born 1896 died in Palestine in Nov 1917. Unfortunately the name of the boy was not recorded on the back of the photo. Can anyone identify what era this was from the jacket to give me some idea of which sibling it is. He looks around 14 or 15.

Hi JmcK unfortunately there is no photographer name or address on the photo. It is quite crude and doesn't appear to be a professional photo although it is mounted on a cardboard backing. Many thanks.

Could it be a Post Office uniform. They employed boys as telegraph boys. Try the PO Archives.

Have you found the two boys on census returns? That might give you a clue as to which one it is. He looks old enough to have left school (at 13 yrs) so possibly an occupation might be indicated.

Many thanks brunes08. in 1901census William Blyth is aged 17 and listed as a Navvy. George Blyth is aged 9 and listed as a scholar. By 1911 William is in the army. I can't find George in 1911 census.

Following a report from Jayne Shrimpton photo identification service the lad in the photo is very likely to be William George Blyth the elder brother.
