Brick Wall finding what happened to my Great Grandfather

Postby kohagan » Sat Jul 22, 2017 2:02 pm

Can anyone help me find what happened to my Great Grandfather Henry Hinksman (born 1842 in Madeley Shropshire) and his 4 children, after his wife (Rebecca) (nee Matthews b 1841) died after childbirth in 1883. He was left with young children Ernest Hinksman b1883; Henry b1873; John Alfred b1875 and Albert Edward b1877. I cannot find any record of their marriage, and he shows on my Grandfather (John Alfred) british military records as living at 20 Charles St. Dublin in 1892, but cannot find any records for him from 1883 to 1892, I have no death records for him, or if he remarried.
I know Henry (1873) and John Alfred (1875) went on to marry but up until that point I cannot find anything. I would appreciate any guidance as to what I should do next.

On Scotland's People, there is an 1897 death record in St George for a Henry Patrick Hinksman (age 55).

In case the family were living in Ireland by 1891, I believe documents from the 1881 and 1891 Irish censuses were pulped during the First World War. It could explain why the family are proving difficult to locate in any 1891 census report.

You are so right, that could very well be the problem for sure. Thanks for talking me through this.
I may have to resign myself to working just on the Sons John Alfred and Henry, and put aside this puzzle for Henry for awhile. Disappointing but that's what happens.

I can see that Ernest was baptised on 17 November 1883, but couldn't find a birth registration for him.

Using GRO and mother's maiden name:

Herbert Hinksman
mmn Matthews
b. Dec Q 1883
Salford 8D- 142

Herbert Hinksman
d. Dec Q 1883
Aston 6D -205

It's very sad that Rebecca died in 1883, presumably shortly after having Ernest, especially as she and Henry had already lost two sons in Salford (James Henry and William). I'm afraid I can't find a marriage for them, and I can't find Henry in 1891.

Okay, going on the assumption that that Henry Hinksman was the Henry Patrick Hinksman who died in Scotland.

I looked for a marriage for Henry, and then for a Patrick in Ireland.

Patrick Hinksman
Julia M'Kenna
Dublin North 2 - 484
Sept Q1891

Possibles for his son Albert Edward

Albert Hinksman
Mary Jane Finegan
Dec Q 1908
Dublin South vol 2 - 631

Possible death
Albert Hinksman
b. abt 1880
d. March Q 1913
Celbridge vol -334

Have you tried newspapers ? It is amazing what you are able to find sometime.

Thank you so much for all your help, this definitely appears to be him and matches up to other info that I have. It looks like he remarried Julia. Thanks for suggesting newspapers. Is that where you find a lot of info? I have not been lucky with papers put perhaps I have not searched correctly. I'll give it a try again.

Yes it is very sad, she was only 43 and past 10 days after giving birth to Ernest. She actually lost her first 4 children at the ages of 2mths, 4 myths, 3 years and 8 years. The health system was not as it is today for sure.
