Alexander Wright Acquroff (1876-1909-1911)

Postby jamie84 » Sat Jul 22, 2017 12:38 pm

Hey Folks

Looking for death info for my great grandfathers cousin Alexander Wright Acquroff who was born in Edinburgh on the 23rd August 1876.

He was a barman and spirit merchant"s assistant and married Margaret Skinner Martin (1885-1913) on the 26th July 1909 in Edinburgh.

He died sometime between 1909 and 1911 as his wife was widowed and remarried in July 1911 in Boston, USA. Can"t find his death in the British deaths at sea. Perhaps he died on voyage from Scotland to America.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jamie84,
Nothing on Scotlands people.Family search has a Sophia A. Acquroff b. 1870 Midlothian (sibling?)
There is Robert W.Acquroff b. 1847
also a Robert W. R. A Acquroff b. 1849. in the 1881 census he's in St Giles,Edinburgh.
Alexander is listed on the 1881 census aged 4 in St Giles,Edinburgh.
No death.

Alexander Wright Acquroff (1876-1909-1911)

Postby jamie84 » Sat Jul 22, 2017 5:59 pm

Hi Grace

The Sophia A. Acquroff I think is his cousin and the Robert W. Acquroff born 1847 is his father. The other Robert Acquroff born 1849 could also be his father too.

I have previously got the info about Alexander being listed as a 4 year old in the 1881 census.

Thanks for your help.

Jamie

It looks like Margaret's parents emigrated to Boston in 1909.
Tried to find her or Alexander in the 1910 USA census but no luck.
Her second husband, John McLean Mackenzie, may have emigrated from Scotland in October 1910.

Their marriage record says they were both residing in "3 Ward Court, So. Boston" on 4 July 1911.

Don't know if the following would be helpful or not in finding Alexander:

Alexander Wright Acquroff (1876-1909-1911)

Postby jamie84 » Sun Jul 23, 2017 6:53 am

Hey

Thanks for your reply.

I didn't know any of the info about Margaret Skinner Martin"s parents or her second husband so thanks for that.

I knew about Margaret Skinner Martin"s marriage and death details.

I will have a look at the consulate registers. Hopefully it will shed more light. We will see.

Thanks again for your help.

Jamie

The 1909 marriage gives the same address for Alexander and Margaret (Maggie), 13 Drumdryan Street, Edinburgh

So this must be Margaret's mother and a younger sister arriving in Boston on the Saxonia a few months later in 1909?
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:23X3-KGZ

Index on FS implies that Isabella was born England, but on the manifest -
Isabella Martin, 47, Housewife, and Lizzie Martin, 7, child
Both Scotch
Last residence - Scotland Edinburgh
Nearest relative/friend in country whence came - Daughter/Sister
Mrs Wright, 13 Drumdryan Street, Edinburgh

Was there another daughter of Edward and Isabella Martin who married a Wright? Or is it referring to Margaret, wife of Alexander Wright Acquroff?
Did Alexander intend to drop the Acquroff name for Wright?

There's a death in Boston in 1910, very limited details
Alexander Wright, 25, born Scotland, married, died of peritonitis, 8 March
Says his father was also Alexander, but that may be wrong perhaps. No details given for mother, and for occupation says "none".
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1463156
Might be a very outside possibility. Perhaps wife Margaret had not even arrived in Boston at that time? I can't see her in the 1910 US census. But then, like MayHam, I can't find the Martin family either.

Be sure to let us know if you find the death of Alexander Acquroff.
And also Margaret's arrival in America, with or without her husband!

Thanks for both of your replies.

To Ian:

I was familiar with the address 13 Drumdryan Street, Edinburgh. I think the Mrs Wright refers to her daughter Margaret Acquroff m.s Martin.

I didn't think of searching just for the surname Wright, though as Acquroff is a Russian/foreign name you he might wanted to change it to blend in. Didn't know about the death in 1910.

May be Alexander came out first to look for work and died before she could follow him to America.

The Boston record is brief, though since he would have changed his surname perhaps the person informing about the death didn't know much info just what he was told.

Perhaps the informer got mixed up as his grandfather my great great great grandfather was called Alexander Wright as well.

I will have a look and see what the likelihood of this happening would be.

Thanks again.

Jamie

I will have a look for the Sean Hayes WDYTYA programme on YouTube.

Thanks for your assistance.

Just an update on my research. Was unable locate Alexander and Margaret in the emigration records, though with Ian"s help managed to locate Alexander Acquroff"s death under the name Wright in March 1910.
