1911 Census search Albert Vivian SMART and parents

Postby JMcK » Wed Jul 19, 2017 3:50 am

Can anyone see in 1911 the family of

Albert Thornton Fountain SMART b 1869, Leeds
His 'wife' Marguerite (maiden name HUMPHRIES/HUMPHREYS) b abt 1881
and their son Albert Vivian SMART b 1902 Toxteth Park, Lancashire. registered as Smart

Albert T.F. Smart has been known to go by the surnames FOUNTAIN and also by SMITH but in the June qtr 1892 Salford, Lancashire he married either Mary Ann FULLBROOK or Alice GORTON as Albert Fountain SMART

in 1903 Albert Vivian was baptised in Liverpool and father's name is Albert Fountain SMART mother Marguerite
When Albert F and Marguerite married in 1918, In Liverpool, he is just Albert SMART, witnesses are Vivian SMART & Mary J WILSON

So.. I feel they should be easily found in the 1911 census, in Liverpool, but I cannot see them.
they aren't at 55 Kent Street, which was their address at marriage.

Thank you for looking as always
Jo

Hi
Haven't found them in 1911, I'm afraid.
On the earlier marriage, Albert married Mary Ann Fullbrook,
"Salford Register Office or Registrar Attended" (Lancashire BMD)

Seem to have had a daughter
June 1897 Cardiff 11a 377
Smart, Bell Laurina Sarah Ann
mother Fullbrook

Baptism for her, 28 April 1897, Cardiff St John
Parents Albert Fountain and Mary Ann

They are all in Cardiff in 1901
Mother and daughter there in 1911

1911 Census search Albert Vivian SMART and parents

Postby brunes08 » Wed Jul 19, 2017 4:05 pm

I suppose there is always the possibility that Albert and Marguerite didn't want to complete the census form and avoided doing so. As they were not married until 1918 perhaps they were keeping a low profile! Do you know what happened to Mary? Whoops - just re-read the last bit of Ian's post about her being in Cardiff.
Also just read the newspaper article. Got himself into a bit of a pickle, didn't he? I'm presuming the intended was Marguerite. Any way of knowing for certain?

Jo - do you have any further details regarding Marguerite Humphreys/Humphries ? The 1918 marriage record indicates her father was George Humphreys (boilermaker); and there is a 1959 death registration for a Marguerite Smart (age 80) in the Wirral district.

Have you managed to find a birth for Marguerite, or any census record appearances for 1881 to 1901? Just curious, in case it offers any hints for the missing 1911 census you are looking for.

Sounds like Marguerite is a bit of a mystery, as well, then.

Does anyone know if the record of Banns are kept when the marriage doesn't go ahead?

The question is more like "Are records of banns kept and available?".

In general, availability of banns in Record Offices seems quite thin. Where they are kept, all the ones that I've seen, appear to be written as they go along - usually the 3 banns for the couple are together. Sometimes the books are preprinted forms but I have a vague idea that I have seen plain paper books.

Anyway, what all that means is that in those circumstances, it's physically impossible to remove a set of banns if the marriage didn't take place - cross them through is about all that can be done.

What does it say on the 1918 marriage certificate about Albert's status? Does he state he is a widower or bachelor? I've tried finding a death record for Mary before 1918 but nothing looks comvincing. If she had died then the marriage would be legal. If she had not died is there a possibility they were divorced or is the marriage bigamous?
