Death of John Eustis is unrecorded.

Postby d.e.gordon » Thu Jul 13, 2017 5:34 pm

No Death Certificate for John Eustis. Born in Crowen, Cornwall in April 1807, he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Grundy in February 1829. In about 1842 they moved to present day Swansea. His death in about 1850 was not registered, but John EASTECE was buried in 1st November 1850 at The Church of St David and St Cyfelach, Llangyfelach, Swansea. Family lore has it that he died falling down a mine shaft, but without a death certificate and unable to find any newspaper reports, I cannot confirm the family story. Can anyone help?

I understand that not all BMDs made it from the various register offices to the GRO so John's death record may still be with the Swansea office.
It might be worth contacting them:
Civic Centre, Oystermouth Rd, Swansea SA1 3SN, United Kingdom 01792 636188

Hello Michael.
These are the results of a Freereg.org search.
I can't see any headstone inscriptions online, so I don't know if a wander round the churchyard might reveal anything.

Burial date 7 Nov 1850
Person age 43
Burial person forename John
Burial person surname EUSTACE
Burial person abode Mynyddnewydd
County Glamorgan
Place (link for place information) Llangyfelach
Church name St David and St Cyfelach
Register type Parish Register

The Mynyddnewydd colliery had an underground chapel, see website below.
It appears to have just four youngsters' deaths in 1846 due to explosion.

Good Luck

Thanks for your interest. I did contact the Swansea office and they did a search for me, but found nothing. I'd like to actually visit them and try again - one day. (I live nearly 200 miles away.)

Hi Jimbo50 and d Gordon . Thank you both very much for the information . I've been slowly piecing together how John had moved from Crowan about 1840 to the Swansea area . It seems that nearly all the Eustis' in this area were descended from him , although we seem to be the only branch left now . If you're ever in the area then be good to catch up . Thanks again for now .

I apologise to you Dave for using your post
Have you looked in the churchyard, Michael ?
I'm often going past on the M4, on way to Llanelli.

Hi both , yes I have had a wander around the churchyard but found no inscriptions I'm afraid . I will try again though as it's easily possible I missed some . When I get the time I'm going to have a good look at the parish records .
