Marriage between Robert Stone and Mary Chivers(?).

Postby pforkes » Thu Jul 13, 2017 12:48 am

Robert Stone is my great grand uncle.

He was born on 2nd February, 1844, in Bushley Gloucestershire.

The 1851 and 1861 censuses has him living with his parents and siblings, in Bushley. I cannot find him on the 1871 census.

The 1881 census has him living at Goldthorn Court, Bushley with his wife (Mary) and four children.

According to the G.R.O., the maiden name of the four children in Chivers. The eldest child is Elizabeth Ann Stone, whose birth was recorded in Q1 1869 (suggesting thatcher parents would have married before that).

I have been unable to find any record of a marriage between Mary Chivers and Robert Stone.

Can anyone see what I am missing?

When I read your post my first thought was that perhaps they never married, or married after having their family.

I found a marriage for a Robert Stone and Mary Chivers in the December Quarter of 1890 registered in Birmingham. Of course it might not be your couple, but let me tell you that strange things happen in family history research. You would probably need to get the marriage certificate to check on his father's name, which you must have from the census returns. Let us know if you succeed in finding their marriage.

I am not finding an Albert Stone in the 1871 census. Can you tell me how you are finding him?

As JMck says, Robert has been transcribed as Albert when living in Goldthorn Hill Lane in 1871, with Mary, Elizabeth Ann and Emma Rose, but on the census image, he's listed as Robert, and it really doesn't look much like Albert.
