Who did Tom (aka Thomas) Matthews marry?

Postby Cachalot6972 » Sun Jul 09, 2017 11:56 am

I wonder if the combined experience of the forum members could help to shed some light on a problem that I've been circling round for a while now; it's driving me crazy and I'm wondering if there are any other avenues to try:

My problem is: who did Tom (aka Thomas) Matthews marry? (If, indeed, he did marry).

Birth: Tom Matthews 1859 Q3 Newton A 5B 145 [Martin]. MMS from GROI.
He's the son of John Matthews & Rosetta Churchward Matthews (nee Martin). Tom was born in Torquay which was in the Newton Abbot district.

1861 & 1871 censuses, he's with his parents in Torquay
1881 census: Thomas Matthews, age 22, single, Groom, 11 Sussex Mews, Marylebone, born "Devon Torquay".
1891 census: Thomas Mathews, age 30, married, Coachman Domestic, born "Devon Torquay". He seems to be married to Annie, age 28 who was born in Oxford(shire?), and they have two children, Willie & Ethel born in Paddington. Using the GRO online index, I have yet to find any children with any variation of their forenames with the same mother's maiden surname born anywhere.

Looking on FreeBMD & Findmypast, I thought their marriage might be this one:
Tom Matthews = Annie Webster 1882 Q1 Reigate 2A 193; but after checking the GROI, by 1891 they have had three children, all in Reigate.

Nor is it the Thomas Matthews in an 1882 Q2 Marylebone marriage; he married Hannah O'Brien. 'Been there, got the wrong cert'.

I have two contenders for Tom's death: Thomas Matthews 1893 Q3 Marylebone 1A 407: Age 34, which fits a year of birth of 1859; or Tom Matthews 1891 Q3 Watford 3A 280: Age 31.

After what may be Tom's death, this looks like a remarriage for Annie:
Annie Louisa Matthews = George Brown 1900 Q3 Brentford 3A 286.
In the 1901 census (RG13-41-79-7), there's an Anne/Annie (born Oxford) married to George Brown with her daughter Ethel (no sign of Willie), along with George's daughter Lily, in Hammersmith. None of them yet found in 1911.

A bit of ferreting around found that George's first marriage was: George Brown = Christian Anderson 1885 Q1 Brentford 3A 58. They had two children, Sarah Amelia (1886) & Lily (1889). Christian died in 1894:

I think I might have to go for Annie's marriage cert with George in the hope it shows her maiden surname, then the 1893 death cert for Thomas/Tom.

Hi
It's a tough one!
George and Lily appear to be in Epsom in 1911? George is 49, born Isleworth.

There is a marriage for a William Thomas Matthews.

William Thomas Matthews
Rose Clara Childs
Dec Q 1908
Fulham 1A- 574

The Banns show that his father is Thomas Matthews, deceased, coachman.
The marriage took place at St Luke's, Shepherds Bush, London.

William Thomas and Rose are in the 1911 census with two children.

bcbrit: Thanks very much for your reply; I appreciate your looking, but I'm afraid it's the wrong bloke - see Ian's reply...

ianbee: Spot on: once again you pull the proverbial chestnuts out of the fire; I bow before your detective skills!
I was looking for a marriage before the children - entirely in the wrong place - ho hum... And as for you getting the children as well..!

And this is Anne: ALDER, ANNE LOUISA [WAYNE] GRO Reference: 1862 D Quarter in ABINGDON Volume 02C Page 247.

So that's that wall crumbled then, but as we all know, there's more on the horizon - you probably haven't heard the last of me!

bcbrit: My apologies, you may well be right. I was getting confused between the various Matthews'.
Yes, Thomas William may well have transposed his names, there's no earlier death for him anyway.
Well spotted.

And I think this is also Anne:
BROWN, ANNIE LOUISE Age 38 GRO Reference: 1901 S Quarter in FULHAM Volume 01A Page 133.
Certainly the right age for a birth in 1862 Q4, and why George describes himself as a widower in 1911...
Thanks again folks for putting me on the right track...

The other thing is that although on the marriage record the age of Thomas Matthews is approximately correct, and his occupation is correct, and his father's occupation (Gardener) is correct - his father is given as William Matthews!
