WW2 bombing in Plymouth

Postby Vondick » Fri Jul 07, 2017 2:44 pm

Hello, can anyone tell me the dates that Plymouth was bombed in WW2 and, more especially, if the main hospital was hit. Many thanks. Yvonne

You might try writing to Powderham Castle. They have been collecting war stories from that period.

Thanks for your replies.my reason for asking is that I am researching a friend's family and we are told that a child of the family was in hospital in Plymouth to have his tonsils removed when the hospital was bombed and he suffered serious brain damage. I have no idea which hospital.

City General Hospital (Freedom Fields) formerly Greenbank Infirmary originally Plymouth Workhouse was hit on 13 Jan 1941 and on 20 Mar 1941.

I would suggest the hospital records. The admission and discharge register for that period has survived at Plymouth and West Devon Area Record Office.

There is no indication about the survival of clinical records.

The children's ward of the City Hospital ( rebuilt eventually into Derriford) was a direct hit with only 3 children surviving. 14 hospitals were damaged throughout the bombing between 1940 -44. There is a lot on line you can discover more from.
