James Joseph McLynn - North Staffs Died 1918 - URGENT HELP!

Postby sarahlouise_robertson » Wed Jul 05, 2017 11:16 am

Hi All,

I am personally doing my family research (hence being a member!) but I am also a BBC journalist working on a story to try and trace the relatives of JAMES JOSEPH MCLYNN, from Burslem in Staffordshire.

Here are the details:

James was the son of Mrs Agnes McLynn who at the time of his death lived in Waterloo Road, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. He also had a sister Mary who was living at home and was aged 25 when he died. James was a crate maker when he enlisted in the Army in Lichfield, Staffordshire in October 1915 aged 19.

I've found his service records on Ancestry/FindMyPast and also on Staffs BMD there is the entry for him, and others - who look to be illegitimate.

MCLYNN James MCLYNN Burslem Stoke-On-Trent BUR/118/080
Staffordshire Birth indexes for the years: 1898
Surname Forename(s) Mother's Maiden Name Sub-District Registers At Reference
MCLYNN Margaret MCLYNN Burslem Stoke-On-Trent BUR/124/019
Staffordshire Birth indexes for the years: 1900
Surname Forename(s) Mother's Maiden Name Sub-District Registers At Reference
MCLYNN Mary MCLYNN Burslem Stoke-On-Trent BUR/129/053

At the time on enlisting he was living 375 Waterloo Rd, Cobridge Stoke on Trent

His Regimental Number: 19453
Regiment Name: North Staffordshire (Prince of Wales's) Regiment

HELP!!!!

There's a death for Margaret in 1899 age 1 - so no relatives from here!
and a death for Mary within the same qtr as birth (1900).
EDIT
1901 Census mother is named as Bridget McLynn (Mary & James with her) step dau to Head of House.
all declared born Staffordshire N.K. (not known)
The head of Household is Martin Gavin

Bridget McLynn appears to have been Margaret's daughter from a previous marriage and this is possibly her birth entry:
MCLINN, BRIDGET Mother's maiden name MCDONALD
GRO Reference: 1875 M Quarter in WOLSTANTON Volume 06B Page 168
It's unclear whether Mary & James are Bridget's children, but seems likely, in which case was she known as Agnes?

James McLIN b1842 Mayo, Ireland - labourer
Margeret b1837 Mayo, Ireland
James b1860 Mendel, Derbyshire
Mary b1863 as above

Looks to be same group as Margaret & Martin are matches in later Census.

If you want to continue forwards with another family member, Martin McLINN is a good bet:
b1865 March quarter WOLSTANTON Vol 6b page 141 - Mother's maiden name McDONALD

1891 Census 79 Liverpool Rd, Burslem
Martin McLUIN b1862
Sarah A. b1864
Winfred b1889
Martin b1890

Thus Martin & Sarah's marriage likely to be:
Martin McLYNN m Sarah Ann LAWTON Q2 1899 Wolstanton Vol 6b page 206

1901 Census 8 Cross St, Burslem
Martin McELIN b1861 widower
Winifred b1890
Martin b1891
John b1893
Daniel b1894
James b1897

1911 Census same address as 1901
Martin Mc ELIN b1860
All above children in household

Please pm me if this is useful and you want to go further. I think there needs to be purchase of a few certificates before this can be confirmed as the correct family group especially as Agnes is rather elusive in the records.
