Ferry family

Postby Tobina » Mon Jul 03, 2017 8:51 am

I am looking for any information about John Ferry born in Bootle, Liverpool, in 1876. I have census records from 1901 & 1911 and also details of the ships he served on in the early 1900s. I also have his death in 1958 but no details of his whereabouts between 1876 & 1901, apart from his marriage in 1897 to Julia Maguire. Any information is appreciated.

There are many John Ferry's

On Ancestry.co.uk there is a John Ferry on many ships crew lists eg Luciana 1898, where his home address is given as 7 Neville St - these would be worth a longer look.

A John Ferry is also listed in Campaign Medals Awarded to WWI Merchant Seamen, 1914-1925 (google to get link) where it says Ferry, John - Date of birth: 20 May 1877 Service number(s): 291777. Could this be your man?

Thanks for the replies. On the marriage certificate the father is John, no sign of him after 1877 when he appears on a crew list. I've checked all crew lists & some are John's however as you say there are quite a few & some of the entries are John's son also John, that's 3 generations of John's who were merchant seamen.

Hi,

Does it say on the marriage certificate if John Sr is deceased?

If so, this could possibly be a reason as to why John Jr has been difficult to find.

I have found a possibility for John's parents;

In 1871, Toxteth Park, Liverpool John Ferry, 33 and his wife, Annie, 32 and both from Pembrokeshire.
John is listed as a master mariner.

They are the only likely couple I have been able to find.

On the 1911 census, John says he was born in Bootle, but has written 'Irish' in the nationality column, presumably because his parents, or at least his father, was Irish. Could you clarify - what is the occupation of his father as shown on John's marriage cert to Julia?

My relative only has the church marriage record however we know that John's father was a sailor. We have the 1911 census & think that the wife gave the details & as she was Irish & a very strong minded woman she made everyone Irish! John's father was born in Liverpool & mother in Ireland so the family of John & Anne are not his parents. Thanks to all for the help.
