Siege of Metz 1870...

Postby Cachalot6972 » Sat Jul 01, 2017 3:53 pm

Does anyone know why French prisoners from the Siege of Metz would be in England?
There doesn't seem to be too much about it on the interweb, but it seems to have been part of a running fracas between the French and the Prussians. At Metz, the French eventually surrendered because of starvation.

My interest is in one of my several times removed second cousins - Selina 'Fronty' (nee Matthews) born 1848, who's 1871 census entry reads: "Wife of French soldier - one of the Metz prisoners"

Needless to say, there doesn't seem to be any marriage record for Selina nor does any name like, or pronounced like, Fronty appear after 1871...

pete25: Thanks for your reply. I'd seen the Wikipedia article but not the other one.
I'm still wondering why any prisoners would be in England - presuming Selina met him in the UK that is.
Selina seems to disappear after 1871, so she may have gone to live in France.
