1668 Latin will or marriage?

Postby MayHam » Thu Jun 29, 2017 1:34 am

Does anyone know Latin? I can't make heads or tails of the attached (will or marriage?) of Gavin Moir.
Thank you.

Almost certainly it is a will - begins The Testament Dative .....
but in general, it is beyond me to read. It may well contain some peculiarly Scottish terms, so suggest that you consult a guide to Scottish wills (testaments)
Good luck

Well given that it's in the ScotlandsPeople wills collection, and that stuff was normally kept separate, I think that we can be certain that it's a will - especially if, as Sylvia says, it starts with Testament Dative.

But you have 2 basic problems that I can't solve either! One is that when you do read it, it'll probably be riddled with Scottish legal terms and the other is that the style of handwriting is so radically different. I think that the National Records of Scotland site has a tutorial on Scottish handwriting styles but that's all the help that I can offer personally.... Sorry.

Thank you.
The following summary was provided by Ancestry.com.

Text: Moir Gavin, portioner of Udingstoune, par. of Bothwell 28 Oct 1668
Book: Marriages (Marriage)
Collection: Ayr, Lanark, & Stirling: - The commissariot record of Glasgow Register of testamenis, 1547-1800

I am wondering if he is the same Gavin Muir who married Eliz. Clerk and had a son, Robert, baptised at Abbey (Paisley) in 1684?
