Missing family members - Hibbert, Winstanley

Postby DianaCanada » Tue Jun 27, 2017 8:52 pm

Am trying to find out what happened to John Hibbert, his son James, and stepson John Thomas Winstanley.

John was born ca Apr 1833 in Hulme, Manchester, the son of Joseph Hibbert and Ellen Clare. In Sep of 1863, in Manchester, he married Harriet McNamee Winstanley, a widow with a young son, John Thomas, b. 1859, Manchester district, most likely in Ancoats.

John and Harriet had two children, Harriet and James (b. ca Nov 1867). I have traced Harriet, who married Matthew Spain/Spane; she died as a young adult. In 1881 James and his half brother John Winstanley are living together in Ancoats, Manchester. By 1891 John is married to Mary Murphy and the have several children. James is still with them, single, a hawker.

Meanwhile, John Hibbert is living apart from Harriet by 1881, with an Annie Grindrod, listed as a visitor. Harriet has a male lodger and is listed as married. In 1891 John is listed with Delilah James as a lodger in Salford. In 1901 he is with his brotherJames again in Salford.

After 1901 I lose track of John. I can find no suitable death record for him. There is one in 1904 who is the right age but the probate listing points to someone else.

I also cannot find young James Hibbert or John Winstanley after 1891, or the latter's family.

One interesting fact about James - he appeared in court as a babe in arms when his mother went to court on charges of fortune - telling. This case appeared in many papers around Britain.

Advice welcome!

Thank you for finding the Winstanleys, Ciderdrinker. I found a George on the 1939 Register but there were two born within the possible time frame, both with the mother having the maiden name of Murphy!

Could this be your James in the 1901 census? James Hibbert, born Manchester 1866, general labourer, inmate, Crumpsall Hospital, Prestwich.

Yes, I guess it could be him, the age is off by a year, but that is not ruling him out. There doesn't seem to be anything to indicate it is him, though. Am not sure Prestwich would have served the Ancoats area where he lived at least until 1891. Thanks for having a look!
