would they be able to tell me where he fought ?

No - they'd tell you to look yourself or hire a researcher. It really does take a lot of time to look through all the relevant diaries. And even then, all you ever know is where that particular battery was - if he wasn't there because he was in hospital, say, you would never know that if, as I suspect, his detailed paperwork was lost in WW2.
