Royal Flying Corp / Royal Air Force

Fri May 30, 2008 5:56 am

Based on an old photograph, my great uncle Arthur Stump Lewis served in either the Royal Flying Corps or Royal Air Force during World War I (1914-1918). But despite paying a researcher to check various sources at National Archives, I am no closer finding out anything about his military service and the researcher has come back without any findings.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

No suggestions I'm afraid. The National Archives hold records for both the RFC and RAF and I would have expected a professional researcher to find any records, if they exist. You are probably aware that the NA have a web page on the RFC/RAF at [link=http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enationalarchives%2Egov%2Euk%2Fcatalogue%2Fleaflets%2Fri2049%2Ehtm&lBack=-1]http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enationalarchives%2Egov%2Euk%2Fcatalogue%2Fleaflets%2Fri2049%2Ehtm&lBack=-1[/link]

The only suggestion is that if your great uncle went on to serve with the RAF in the Second World War his records will still be with the RAF.

Yes, I would have expected that too! Thanks for the link - as I think my great uncle continued after April 1918 but not beyond 1919 (when he returned home to become a farmer, like his father and brothers), I will probably have to try the RAF direct to see if they hold anything.

If he was a officer then he would have been listed in the April 1918 Air Force List.

Looking at Lewis A gives

Lewis A
Lewis A D M
Lewis A G
Lewis A G
Lewis A M
Lewis A V
Lewis A W

If none of these initials match your uncle Arthur Stump Lewis then you can rule out that he was an officer at April 1918 and concentrate on the enlisted men records.
