Capt.James Hussey of Salisbury

Postby megdavis2411 » Fri Jun 23, 2017 11:25 am

I have a Capt. James Hussey in my tree who was baptised in 1746 at St Thomas', Salisbury. He married Jane Unknown about 1765 and had 3 children,John Denis Hussey (d 1817), Maria Hussey (b abt 1769 d 1830) and James Hussey (possibly b 1776,d 1816).I think he died before 1809. I can't find any details about this Captain James Hussey except a record of a portrait painted in about 1800. The blurb with this painting says that he was born in 1757 and was an officer in the 17th Light Dragoons posted to Nth America in 1775 (He would have only been 18). The blurb continues to say that in the 1809 census he was listed as living in The Close, Salisbury and was described as 'barrister out of practice, magistrate and alderman". His son James married firstly, Louisa Hinxman in 1804 and secondly, Elizabeth Hibbard in 1813.
This Captain James Hussey's older brother, Thomas Hussey, is my 4x great grandfather. Of course, there are many James Hussey's in and around Salisbury. My lot seem to have been mayors, aldermen and this James Hussey was the nephew of William Hussey MP (1724-1813).

Any help in joining the dots would be appreciated. Meg Davis, Brisbane

If he married in 1765 to Jane and subsequently had three children before embarking for North America in 1775 aged 18 .
could mean he was either a very young bridegroom and father or
1. He was 18 at an earlier date 18 perhaps when he enlisted.
2. Perhaps a couple Couple of James HISSEyS' records have become tangled?
