Grace and JohnCope

Postby Dragonlady » Wed Jun 21, 2017 10:50 am

I am trying to find some information on a lady called Grace, she was born in St Andrews, London, born c.1788 and she married a John Cope born c. 1777. On the 1841 Census they are living in South Normanton, Derbyshire and are listed as teachers, previously they taught at St. Werburgh's, Derby. My brother has searched for them both at the Metropolitan archives in London and at Kew. John Cope died in 1849 and on the 1841 Census he is listed as not being born in Derbyshire. My brother and I can find no record of their marriage or their births. Grace is listed on the 1851 census as being born in East Harding Street, London, but we can't find any record relating to a Grace who later married John Cope. Any help on where to search next would be gratefully received.

I've just looked at the 1841 census and next to graces name it has a tick in the box for whether born in Scotland,Ireland or foreign parts. Maybe your looking at the wrong person or wrong location?

Where did you get the information that Grace was born in St Andrews, London? As Cmcquade says, on the 1841 census, John was not born in county (Derbyshire), and Grace wasn't just 'not born in county' but there's a tick in the box indicating born Scotland, Ireland, or Foreign Parts. Could she have been born in St Andrews, Scotland? If so, they may have married there. Unfortunately, in 1851, asked where she was born, Grace gave the name of a road.
There are some baptisms in Derbyshire for children with parents named John and Grace Cope, which you may already have, but in case not: Thomas 1807, Andrew 1808, and Mary Anne 1811, all St Werburgh's. Edwin 1815, John 1817 (d1818) and Emma 1819, all South Normanton.

I expect you have found all the below, but it wasn't mentioned earlier:

East Harding Street is in Holborn. So is St.Andrew's Church, 200 m away. Middlesex at the time.

In 1851 she is in Pinxton, Notts.

In 1861 she is probably in Lenton, Notts, as a visitor to the Pearsons. Born St.Andrew's Middx.

In 1871 she is in Ironville, Alfreton as a mother in law of the Hubball family. Born in London.

It may well be her who died 1871 in Ironville/Belper.

There is a John Cope born 1776 who was buried 1855 in St.Werbeugh's Derbyshire but Grace is on her own in 1851.

She is Not Born County in 1841
Those NBC's in that enumeration district have all been ticked, presumably later by a government clerk.

I don't think grace really knew where she was born. It seems different on most census records.

As PaulHOI says, Grace was with the Hubball family in Alfreton 1871, listed as mother-in-law. Her daughter Emma married John Hubball DecQ 1838, Belper, 19 358. Grace's own marriage is proving more elusive!

On the baptism of Henry, 21st February 1813, St Werburgh, John Cope's occupation is Gardener.

Thanks for the messages. I have lots of info on John and Grace Cope from their residence at St Werbughs Derby as teachers until their deaths. I just can't find a record of their marriage anywhere.
