Looking for Esther Tanner

Postby stefano » Fri Jun 09, 2017 6:27 pm

I am trying to obtain Esther Tanner birth certificate. She was born abt 1838 to Robert Tanner and Mary in Swallowfield Berkshire. I have tried the bdm site and the gro births too. I want to get the certificate so I can find her mum's maiden. Tracing my dad's maternal line. Esther is the only daughter of Robert who was born since 1837, others before.

I looked these names up and found a 1841 census and 1851. On the 1841 I found
Robert janner (tanner) born Wiltshire 1801
Mary Janner swallow field 1801
Lucy
Susan
Amelia
Esther age 2 born 1839 swallowfield

Now the 1851 doesn't have Mary and states Robert as a widow. So she must have died between 1841 and 1851,but there are another 4 tanner children and no mother.

Mary tanner - swallow field 1842
Elizabeth tanner - "1845
Mary tanner. ". 1847
Thomas tanner " 1850

If Mary is the mother of these children she must have died 1850-51? I looked for a marriage but haven't found one yet.

Just found

Name: Esther Tanner
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 7 Jul 1838
Baptism Date: 12 Aug 1838
Baptism Place: Swallowfield,Berkshire,England
Father: Robert Tanner
Mother: Mary

Says baptism place. She may have been born somewhere else?
The only marriage I've found in Wiltshire to Robert tanner is Mary Henley canning in 1825 ( she may have been pregnant with Lucy who was born about 1826)

Hi
Elizabeth Tanner born Sep 1845 Wokingham has a mother's maiden name Sowerby.
The younger two children have a dash for mother's maiden name so may be illegitimate.I can't find a registration for the older children.
Samuel Tanner married Elizabeth Sowerby in Sep 1843 at Wokingham so it looks like they are not Robert and Mary's children.
Bapts at Swallowfield for Robert and Mary
Lucy 8.8.1824
Hannah 1.10.1826
Elizabeth 15.3.1829
Susan 9.6.1833
Emily 27.9.1835
and Esther you have.
Mary Tanner buried 20.2.1842 age 42.

The death of Mary Tanner, the births of the illegitimate children - and who the mother was - have already been established. By me, a few weeks ago!

I think this could be the marriage, courtesy of Family Search. Just over the county border, in Hampshire. But close to Swallowfield.
Name: Robert Tanner
Spouse's Name: Mary Appleton
Date: 2 January 1823
Place: Stratfield Saye, Hampshire
England Marriages, 1538–1973

Ann Appleton, 20, is with the Tanners in Swallowfield in 1841. Both she and Mary Tanner were NBC.

Possible from England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975?
Name: Mary Appleton
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 20 January 1799
Christening Place: Stratfield Saye, Hampshire
Father's Name: William Appleton
Mother's Name: Lucy

The 1823 marriage is also on findmypast's Hampshire Marriages. I don't know if there is any extra info.

Not forgetting, from the other thread -
brunes08 wrote:I've had a rummage around and found that Swallowfield was a Wiltshire 'island' within Berkshire. There is an interesting history of the area on line if you just google the name. This island was changed by Act of Parliament in 1894.

Found out that Elizabeth, Mary and Thomas have Lucy as their mother on the baptism records. No father as of yet.

Your question was about Esther Tanner? You want to know her mother's maiden name?
