I wonder if this brick wall thread can accommodate another George William Duncan? This one is my great, grandfather's (the original subject of this thread) son. I know the lad was born in the September quarter of 1869 in Bethnal Green, baptised in 1875 and is on the 1881 census with his mother in Hammersmith. He had 5 sisters, all of whom I can trace. I've been totally unsuccessful in finding any record after the 1881 census and any ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks

PS His third Christian name began with a H.

Possibility? There's a George W Duncan in Philadelphia of similar age, who was born in England.
Married Mary Orr in 1899
Born July 1869 according to the 1900 US census
His age in 1910 and 1930 makes him a year younger
1910

In 1930 immigration year is given as 1887

Is this the chap who died in Philadelphia, 8 January 1934?

Thank you Trace. Yes this is the one, George's mother was Elizabeth Hooper born in Exbourne, Devon.

ianbee, this looks promising. I may buy the birth cert to see the exact date of birth. I'm encouraged by the daughter's name, Elizabeth, same as that of his mother Elizabeth Hooper. George junior was born just before his father died but would have known his mother, she died when he was about 13 years old. Will see if the Ellis Island web site has anything.

Thank you both, I would never have found this info.

Hi Ian, I've tried to find this death record but failed. Would you mind giving me the source? I've ordered the English birth cert so fingers crossed. I'm also going to ask some American cousins to investigate.

Thanks

Thank you, I was searching on 1869 year of birth as per the GRO. I've now found his wife's death cert from 1913, same address as George.

I'm going to post this on two threads. This and the one about Ancestry.com and Ancestry.co.uk as they are related.

My first post here on this thread was about my 2 x grandfather, George William Duncan - born about 1827. This is still work in progress. Then, I tried to find what happened to his son born 1869. I've received so much help and I think without a doubt it's been resolved. Many (huge) thanks to ianbee who found a Philadelphia death record of a GW Duncan who died in 1934, born 1870, mother Elizabeth, that fits, birthday 18 July. Well, today the British birth certificate arrived and the birthdate is 18 JULY 1869!
I think I can live with the one year disparity given his year of immigration has been given on census returns as both 1886 and 1887. So, not only have I found thei answer to a mystery, I've found that he had a granddaughter Louise b. 1935 who may well be living. The next step is to try to find her or her children and hopefully make contact.

I'm delighted so thanks once again
