LDS is the commonly used acronym for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, commonly know as Mormons, who are based in Salt Lake City, USA. These are the people who run the FamilySearch website. This is one of the first ports of call for most genealogists, as their support for genealogists (a by-product of their religion) is fantastic, and all for free. They were the originators of the International Genealogical Index (IGI).

They microfilm parish registers and other records, and then, with the help of supporters, transcribe them and make results available via their FamilySearch website. A lot of these films are now available to view on their website, but some are still only available via their Family History Centres, scattered around the world. The location of these centres can be found on their website.

I hope this gives you a flavour of who they are and what is available from their website and Family History Centres

Simon,
You may like to know that some films, although not indexed yet, are avaialble to browse via their website.
1. Go to 'Catalogue'
2. Enter the place your intersted in
3. Restrict results to 'on-line'. Via drop down box

From the results, select the church records you want to look at, and it will list all the films associated with that church, and periods covered.
If the results show a camera icon, images may be available to view ( some have viewing restrictions)
If it shows a magnifying glass, they are indexed
If it shows a roll of film, it is available to order on microfilm, for viewing at local Family History Centre.

Yes, go to familysearch.org.
Click on search from home page, then select catalogue, and follow steps above. For some images, you may need to register with the site, but this is free and comes without any obligation regards LDS membership.

Most people normally just search indexed records, (click search on homepage, then select records), and may not be aware that a lot of unindexed images are available to view this way.
