Elsewhere, I've seen "L" spelled "Lawful" so assume "N" stands for "Natural Born."

The only way to get some idea is to look at the other entries on that page and see if the L entries have marriages sometime before the baptism and the N entries don't. A missing marriage for an L couple might simply be a failure to find the record. A marriage that is clearly for the N couple is much more difficult to explain away.

You might also look for birth certificates to the same couple post start of registration in 1855, as births registered in some years (most?) include the marriage details.
