John Oakley was christened 8th April 1832, Pontesbury, father Richard, mother Anne. Bethia Brazner (sic) was christened 8/8/1830, mother Ann, no father named.

sdup26 - thank you re christening info - another pre-wedding birth then

Ianbee - you previously gave me some info re Thomas Vick (missing from the census) son of Ann Day and Thomas Vick Snr :

"He may have added a couple of years to his age, perhaps.
Thomas Vick, age 18, Laborer, born Cheltenham, enlisted 28th Foot, December 1876. Regimental number 679.
He was in India from September 1878 to March 1883
Discharged at the end of 1888, he is then in the Army Reserve until 1892.
Next of kin given as father Thomas, mother Ann, brothers Peter, Robert, Alfred, sister Ellen."

This would imply Alfred and Robert were not the same people - unless the name Alfred was used again for this later birth with a different father?

What a family!

Hi
That's very true. We have Robert Oakley age 9 born Cheltenham in 1861, and Robert Oakley age 17 born Birmingham in 1871.
Also there was George Vick, born 1962, a full brother to Thomas, who is not on that list in the army record!
Perhaps Thomas got confused as well.
The thing is, do we ever see Robert and Alfred in the same census?

If there is no Robert yet in the 1851 census, only Richard, Ann and Peter, and the next birth could be
June 1851 Aston
Oakley, Jane
mother Day

Presume that there is no other Oakley-Day couple in the area, and that Jane died. But it doesn't leave much time for a Robert before Alfred.

Cheltenham Mercury and Cheltenham Chronicle, March 1868
Peter Oakley, charged with assaulting his brother Alfred. Mother was in court.
I think that the report in the Mercury may be better, but I don't have access to that one.

Assault
Alfred Oakley : I am 13 yrs old and live with my mother... On Wednesday night I was at my masters house at work when my brother called me out, and as soon as I came he beat me with a cord, and struck me in the eye with his fist.... He beat me for not fetching a tool from his masters which he told me to do about a fortnight before.

Supt Day: The boy was brought to the station yesterday..... I stripped and examined him.... mass of bruises from neck to feet... I never saw a worse case in my life.

Boys mother was called and said she had been obliged to ask his brother to correct him sometimes as he was an unruly boy.....

Prisoner said he was sorry and if he had not had some drink....

Fined £1 + 9s expenses or in default 10 days imprisonment...

I was inspired to subscribe to the BNA following the info above and found the attached information re Robert Brazenor Oakley - thought I'd found something, but our Robert would only have been about 7!
