Help needed with understanding part of a Service Record 1945

Postby JulzMuirhead » Mon May 22, 2017 7:42 pm

I am trying to work out where my Grandfather was sent on the 7th Apr 1945 from which he returned 29th May 1945. The reference to RPFAO or RPFAD is a mystery. Attached is two images from different pages of his service record with the relevant info. My Grandfather was too young for most of WW2, having joined in 1938 (age 14) in 1943 he became part of the 2nd Battalion Hampshire regiment. As far as the family are aware he spent most of the war in Winchester where he also met my Grandmother who served in the ATS there. During the period in Apr/May 1945 (his only time out of UK during the war) he took part in the Liberation of Jersey (Have this medal along with his others). My Dad remembers him telling of how the Germans were lined up waving on the quayside when they arrived on the morning of 9th May 1945. His father also told him that he transported German POWs back to England (apparently they were quite chatty and friendly on the journey). If anyone could help it would be much appreciated, originally got a copy of my Grandfather's Service Record in 2008 and can pretty understand the rest from 1938-1954 except for this most important part.

My best guess would be "FAO" stands for Field Artillery Officer?
Not sure what the "RP" would stand for -- Royal something, maybe?
