1939 register help.

Postby notabilis » Sat May 13, 2017 3:37 pm

I am trying to trace my grandfather John Thomas Cornes's whereabouts before he came to Hertfordshire, from West Bromwich as a young lad, he was born on 18 April 1928, I have managed to find out that he joined the raf at Henlow beds when he came down here, the problem is finding him on the 1939 register, I have found his mother and sister at one address and his father at another, he died 14 may 1991,in Milton Keynes.

His name is unlikely to have been released because he was born less than 100 years ago. Even if you have a death certificate it would have to match exactly what was on the Register (statement by The National Archives).

If there are redaction bars in either his father's or his mother's household, then there's surely a distinct possibility that he's under one of those.

Alternatively (guessing here) each parent might have assumed that the other was going to record him so neither did.

Or if he is there, then in theory, if his details were correct in the 1939, then FMP should have opened his record from the death certificate index. But I am assuming that the match needs to be exact, so if his birth date were not exactly as the entry on the DC index, then the 1939 entry would not be matched so would remain redacted. In addition, the DC index is in the name "John Thomas Cornes" - if the 1939 said "Thomas John Cornes", then I doubt that they would match and so the record would remain redacted until 2028.

None of this helps you find him but suggests that there are possible reasons why it may not be your fault....
