Walkers of Clerkenwell

Postby Jenaheldd » Fri May 12, 2017 2:49 pm

I’m hoping that some fresh eyes might be able to find something that I’ve missed….

I can't find birth records of the 4 children below. I have trawled the GRO registers as they normally come up trumps AND potentially give the mothers maiden name, but even after looking 5 years on either side of any suggested birth date, I’m having no luck. We know the birth dates are vague at best, but I think the locations are off as well.

William Walker: Born around 1840 in Houstead, Middlesex (on FMP this is transcribed as Hampstead)

Sarah Walker (my 2xgt grandmother) : Her date of birth varies from 1846 up to 1849 on the different census, and her place of birth starts as Houstead, Middlesex (Hampstead again maybe) and then changes to Clerkenwell

Elizabeth Walker : Born around 1850/52 in Clerkenwell, London

Mary A Walker : Born around 1853/54 in Clerkenwell, London

Parents are:
William Walker born 1817 +/- 3 yrs, possibly Borough, St Georges, Surrey. No death date known.
Eliza born around 1819 in Essex - on the 1851 census it shows as Bantham, but I don’t think that’s been transcribed correctly. The image could, at a push, be Braintree. Looks like Eliza might have died before 1861

In 1851, they are living at Thomas Street, Saint James Clerkenwell
William is a wood dealer, Eliza is listed as wood dealers wife and William, Sarah and Elizabeth as scholars

1861 they’re in Wynyatt Street, St Marks Clerkenwell & we have dad William with Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary A – no sign of William jnr. He’s listed as widowed and a wood cutter, no occupation listed for any of the girls.

1871 they’re at Taylors Row, St James Clerkenwell. The 3 daughters are still with dad. He’s a tree wood cutter, Sarah and Mary are machinists and Elizabeth works at home

I can follow Sarah as also in 1871, she marries William John Holman and daughter Emma Gean comes along in 1872. William dies in 1881 and Sarah ends up living with her in-laws.

I’ve possibly got Mary on the 1881 census as a housemaid at 74 Clerkenwell Road, St James Clerkenwell but I can’t find her after that – she may have got married – no idea!

Thanks for anything you can add

Ian. Thank you - looking very possible - where did you find them? I must have been looking with my eyes shut!

I still can't find Sarahs birth though. On the GRO site, Ive gone through every year between 1839 & 1854 using maiden name of Yell & shes not coming up.

Hi
It's frustrating, if Sarah is your one. Often we find that one child at least didn't get registered in those early years. Have you managed to find a baptism for her?

Elizabeth Walker : Born around 1850/52 in Clerkenwell, London

If she was in the 1851 census, I don't think she could have been born in 1852.

Could this be Elizabeth Sarah Walker born 4 Apr 1849, bap 29 Apr. Parents William and Eliza. Abode Hampstead?

See Ancestry's LMA collection.

NB Census day was 18 Mar 1851 so the stated age of 1 would be OK

Many births went unregistered in the early days of civil registration.

But the Elizabeth Sarah Walker born Hampstead was registered in June qtr 1849. Mother's maiden surname Burton.
It looks like she died soon after. Death registered Hampstead, Sep qtr 1849.
Buried at St John Hampstead, 15 July 1849. Age 3 months.

There is this possibility
8 November 1846, at St Mary Islington
born 29 Augst 1846
Sarah
Daur of William + Elizabeth Walker
abode Goswell Street Road
father a Grocer

I am thinking that despite the baptism being in Islington, the address is more like St Luke, which might tie in with the Elizabeth birth reg in 1849
