baptism query

Postby sdup26 » Tue May 02, 2017 4:52 pm

I've just found a Catholic baptism in which the godmother was the widowed head of household at the address where the baby was born. They don't have the same surname, and don't appear together on a census, so no relationship known, but should I assume there could be a family connection and research accordingly? Or would that be reading too much into the choice of godmother?

Assuming there "could" be a family connection makes eminently good sense. It is always worth thoroughly researching anyone (witnesses to marriages, visitors at census time etc) who might prove to be a missing link.

Many thanks carobradford; you're right to remind me how important visitors and witnesses can turn out to be, so why not a godparent?
