Missing marriage

Postby tiggerhill » Sun Apr 23, 2017 8:46 am

I am missing the marriage of my rear grandparents THOMAS HILL born January 1874 in Camberwell London, (parents Joseph Hill and Eliza Charlotte Knight) with ANNIE JANE DAVIS born October 1875 in Upton on Severn (parents James Davis and Maria Clifford).
They had their first child Dolly in 1894. Thomas was living in All Saints Road Acton in 1891 but I cannot find Annie on that census.
Thank you

Do you have the birth certificate for Dolly ?

I can't see any Dolly HILL registered in 1894, but there is a Dolly DAVIS in Newent (Q3 vol 6a p249) with no mother's maiden name shown in the index implying she was illegitimate.

Do you have birth registrations of other children ? Comparing them may pinpoint when/where/if they ever married.

Missing marriage

My grandfather Henry was the last of the children in 1910. From the census I have Mary 1895, Mabel 1897, Tom 1899, Kezia 1900, George 1905, William 1906, David 1908.
Mary, Mabel, Tom and Kezia are with them on the 1901 census in Acton but Dolly is not. She is on the 1911 census with them.

Why do you think Annie Jane DAVIS was born in Upton on Severn when the 1911 census clearly states she was born in Wales ?

The answer to your search lies in the marriage of Thomas HILL to Annie Jane GRIFFIN in Acton in 1894. One of the witnesses is Mary Ann DAVIS. The other census records tie the family together and the birth you probably need is Annie Jane GRIFFIN in Llanelly Distirct in 1875

My grandfather's birth certificate says Annie Jane Hill formally Davis.
I looked at this part of the tree a good while ago and am coming back to it. I think I read some where about the borders between England and Wales being different??? But your explanation seems more plausible. If it is Griffin, I'm guessing she was a widow then.

I think she was born in Llanelly in 1875 as Annie Jane GRIFFIN - and her mother (Mary Anne) then married a George DAVIS in Acton in 1879, so she may well have been brought up using his name. She appears with them as A J DAVIS in 1881 and Anne DAVIS on the 1891 census, but then when she married in 1894 she gave her birth name.

You will also find George and Mary Anne DAVIS in the 1901 census in Acton, with one of their grand children Mary Emma HILL (6) in the house, which puts the connection together.

BMD certificates for the key individuals and events should provide the proof.
