James STRANGE b.1 May 1832

Postby trace » Wed Apr 12, 2017 6:20 pm

James STRANGE born 1 May 1832 to parents John & Sarah (accordingly to Metrop. Police Pension Record)
1841 Census has James and brother Richard (without parents) in Uxbridge Union Workhouse and marked as not born in County.
1851 Census has James & Richard, Rail Labourers, as born in Harlington Middx.

I cannot find
baptisms for James or Richard (there may be other children)
marriage for John & Sarah (or maiden name for Sarah)

Any help welcome, thanks.

Hi
Have you considered this marriage at Paddington 17.6.1830
John Strange and Sarah Nelson widow
wit Thomas Ellroy and James Jones.

Richard could be a son from her first marriage.

There is a burial for a John Bailey Strange at Bunhill Fields age 40 1.7.1838 from Long Lane who could be the Dad explaing why the boys are in the Workhouse in 1841.

Another alternative is this marriage 25.4.1853 at St James the Less Bethnal Green
John Strange widower porter 21 Cambden ? St s of James carman
Sarah Adams same d of Thomas Adams leather dresser
wit Thomas Dixon and Joseph Hitchen

The couple already had children in Bethnal Green -William Mar 1841,Henry Thomas Mar 1839 and John James 1837.
They are on the 1841 census together and John is a labourer born c 1805

Richard's marriage in 1853 and John's in 1853 do confirm father John Strange labourer.

Me again
Forget the John and Sarah Adams in Bethnal Green because there is another couple on the 1841 census at Hanwell.
John Strange 40 lab N
Sarah 35 N
William 4 y.

Burial at Hanwell for a John Strange age 64 28.2.1855.

It looks more likely but again no baptism for William who becomes William Needman Strange and moves to Huddersfield and is living with step sister Emily E Greenwood age 34 in Huddersfield in 1861.She is born 1827 in Ealing and on her marriage in Huddersfield St Paul 22.1.1862 she is a widow and gives her father as George Evans, gentleman.
Her first marriage was to Charles Illingworth Greenwood at St Peter Pimlico 20 Mar 1852 as Emily Evans Norton.Wit Henry Nelson and Frances Sherring (no father this time).Address 25 Clinton St
It looks like this is a another brother Henry Nelson Norton born 10.1.1830 at Hanwell but not baptised till 1.4.1868 at St Helen's Bishopgate.

Which doesn't prove Sarah Nelson was James and Richard's mother but does suggest she's been very busy.

There is a Sarah Strange with Emily Nelson/North/Greenwood/Carr on the latter 1871 census with a birth 1793 Fairfield Derbyshire which would match with a baptism 8.1.1791 d of Joseph and Sarah Norton.

Sorry not to do better but hopefully it gives you a few ideas.

Thanks for the ideas.

Richard was younger than James (b1832) so won't be a son from a previous marriage you mention of Sarah's. EDIT: Whoops got that wrong... Richard (21) is only 1yr older in 1851 Census than James (20)

I'll try and trace the other families through to prove / disprove possible links.

Thanks again.....

2nd EDIT : following Richard thro' Census in 1881 he has an older brother Henry with him
Richard 53
Caroline (wife) 53
Henry brother 55

James in 1881 gives age as 48

Now have 3 children of John & Sarah which means the marriage probably 1825 or earlier.
