Peter Gilford (Guildford) born Sawley 1815

Postby Ann G » Sun Apr 09, 2017 11:38 am

I have been researching my husbands Family history for sometime and have hit a brick wall with his great great grandfather. I have his marriage to Martha Flinders in 1837 at Ilkeston parish church and census records all go back to his birth at Sawley but cannot trace a birth record. Any help help gratefully received.

When you say that you "cannot trace a birth record", do you mean that there is no baptism for him in the Sawley registers or that you have not been able to look for him there and are seeking help in doing so?

Is that Sawley in Derbyshire or Sawley in Lancashire?

Well, his wife Martha Flinders was not baptized in a parish church, as far as I can see.
Her baptism was at the Independent Chapel, Ilkeston, 13 November 1816
Martha Flinder, d/o John + Dorothy

Another daughter of John + Dorothy was Hannah Flinders, who was baptized in Ilkeston parish church, 6 June 1828
Hannah married James Platts, 3 May 1847, at Ilkeston (father John Flinders).
Occupation given for John Flinders on both records was Framework Knitter
The Platts had a child of Peter and Martha Gilford with them in both the 1851 census (nephew) and the 1861 census (niece)

So that might be one possibile reason for the failure to find a baptism for Peter in the Sawley PR.

The Ilkeston marriage was on 12 February 1837, pity they didn't wait a few months!
Peter Guilford + Martha Flinders
Both of the parish, the marriage was by Banns
witnessed by Hannah Attenborough and Samuel Whitehead
Samuel was the only one who signed.

Looking for Gilford activity in Sawley at the approximate time
Two baptisms to Thomas + Elizabeth Guilford/Guildford
Ann, 31 March 1815 (father a Waterman)
Hannah, 14 September 1817 (father a Labourer)

Also, perhaps more promising
Baptism, 25 December 1810
Joseph of John + Sarah Gilford

Possible marriage for the parents at Sawley, 5 February 1810
John Gilford, widower + Sarah Weeldon, spinster, both of the parish.

Joseph seems to reappear later, married, and a boatman

There's a burial of a Sarah Guildford at Sawley, 25 July 1815.
Abode Sawley, age 39

Is it possibile that Sarah died as a result of childbirth? And for some reason her husband did not get round to having the hopefully surviving child baptized? Complete speculation, born of desperation perhaps!

Burial of a John Guilford at Sawley, 11 March 1837
Abode Sawley, age 69
Again, annoyingly, just months before the start of civil registration.

Been looking at family trees on ancestry! I would say that the ones featuring this couple are not a good advertisement.

Anyway, forgetting them, Peter was in prison in 1861 (no idea why)
1871, he was in Long Eaton, on the "Ellen", with it's owner and master, George Rigby
Death registered in June qtr 1877, Shardlow
Peter Guildford, age 67
Which would make him older than he says in the census, but may not be accurate of course.

Buried at Sawley, 7 June 1877
Here the age given is 64, abode The Union

Thanks Ianbee. Peter's marriage was sadly a few months too soon. I have got quite a bit of the information you have given but not
the burial of Sarah Guildford in 1815. That does seem a possibility. Peter's wife died in child birth in 1854 and that seemed to break up the family and it was only 7 years before he was in prison. I have spent hours looking through the calendars to see why he was in prison but no luck there. Also looked at newspapers but no luck there either. I have seen other people's trees on Ancestry who seem to have Thomas Guildford and Elizabeth Stenson as his parents but I can't seem to substantiate that. Thanks for your efforts much appreciated ..
