Benjamin Treen - Mary Selley

Postby Treen Family » Thu Apr 06, 2017 7:58 pm

Good afternoon. I have been trying to research my above ancestors - 4th Great grandparents who lived in Kenn / St Thomas Devon but to no avail. I have details of their children but there always appears to be a slight difference in spelling - Tren, Trend, Trem, Trenn or Trim. Would somebody please be kind enough to give me some guidance as to searching / overcome these multiple surnames or any other information in relation to them. I think I am up against a brick wall. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

I'm having trouble identifying the family - it would have been helpful had you provided a date of marriage or birth/baptism.
However, in general terms the best place to search for records of birth/baptism, marriage and burial in Devon is Findmypast, which also has Devon workhouse and other records as well. As for the variations in spelling of the surname - in times past, spelling of names was of little consequence and one can even find alternative spellings of a surname in a single document. These problems are compounded by modern transcriptions and indexes where the person who has done the indexing may have misinterpreted was was written on the document. It is essential that you always check and refer to the original manuscript version of a document and make your own interpretation of what was written.

Ah - think I have found some baptisms in Kenn under the name of TREN - and that is what is written in the parish register:
Henry - 1809
Robert - 1812
Ann - 1815

Other, later, baptisms in Kenn (different parents), show the spelling as TRENN.
I'm still having trouble finding the marriage, though have one in 1803 at Stockland between Benjamin Trim and Mary Manfield.

Hello
The marriage is at Kenn 13.2.1793
Benjamin (F)rend and Mary Selly
wit W Haskins? and Elizabeth Holman.

So another variant to add. That's FMP. Familysearch has him as Trend.
I tried just Benjamin from Kenn ,Devon
1841 Kenn
Benjamin Trenn 80 y
Mary 70 y
Charles Banbury 35 mason y
Ann 25 y their daughter.
Samuel 8 y
George 6 y
Mary 3 y
Emmeline 1 y
James Worsley? shoe maker y
James Ellis 20 shoe maker y

He's buried as Trunn aged 80 20.6.1841.from Kennsford so born 1760.

It is very difficult but I'd start with records from Kenn as it's a smallish parish and search through them for family that might match.
Familysearch use Benjamin and Mary at Kenn
Which gives
William Trend 16.2.1794
Mary Trend 5.7.1795
Samuel Trend 24.1.1802
Benjamin Trend 25.12.1804
William Trenn 8.3.1807
plus the others already found.(the 1815 for ann gives Benjamin as a labourer).
The other Trenn couple is Robert and Mary Langworthy married 20.7. 1815 at Kenn

FMP use Devon baptisms and Kenn or marriages or burials.
So Mary Trenn buried 18.12.1853 Kennford. born 1768.
Mary Ann Trenn 63 5.5.1851 Kenn
Robert Trenn 28.12.1847 Kenn age 77 so born 1770

That said can I find Mary Trenn on the 1851 -NO!

I'll see what else is out there

Hi
Baptised as Trend at Whitestone
Benjamin s of Robert and Anne Trend 23.2.1766
brothers John 4.5.1758,Roger 4.9.1760,William 30.3.1763,Robert 3.9.1769.
? sister Hannah 10.2.1741 d of Robert.
Marriage Robert Trend husnamdman and Anne Cox 29.4.1756
wit John Cox and John Moxsy

Robert buried 14.11.1774 left a Will so you can check if that survived.

The family at Whitestone are all Trend so you shouldn't have any problems
ps for Mary I'd go for the Mary Seeley 15.7.1770 from Exminster d of Henry and Mary but have a look yourself.

As you have both their names it should not be too hard to find them on the census returns, if they lived in 1841 onwards. You also know the names of their children and that should be helpful.

Unfortunately you have not given any dates for anyone to go by and I would say ignore the spelling variations and as you know the area, just search for these people by their Christian names [with whatever surname spelling comes up] and they will have their children with them too.

It will not be a quick way, but on Ancestry you can do village by village and street by street.

Names were often spelt phonetically, hence the variations.
