Evan Samuel Jones missing 1841

Postby jimbo50 » Wed Apr 05, 2017 4:24 pm

Miracle worker Ianbee, identified my Gt x 2 Grandfather, George Jones Chelsea Pensioner.
I think I've found his birth family in Woolwich 1841 census, just days before he signed up for service.
The Marshes, Woolwich..Mother - Mary Jones , 55, Milkwoman, (Later censuses detail given as The Nightingale Dairy, and born Aberystwyth).
George 's marriage is not recorded, although banns were read twice, and his army pension appears to continue to be paid to his wife in Kent after his death,( per 'Own Means' census description ).
George's siblings all christened St Mary Magdalen, father Evan Jones; Edward 1815, William 1817, Thomas 1818, Elizabeth 1820, David 1822, James 1824, then George 1825.
So I followed his brother's marriage, via Granddaughter Mary in 1861 census at the dairy.
David (a seaman) m 5/10/1842 to discover father's name, Evan Samuel Jones, a sawyer. There is a sawpit marked on the OS map Woolwich 1894 just across the Blackwall Approach Road from where I thought the dairy should be. So no apparent reason for him not to be in 1841 census at home. Where might he be ?
There is a Saml Jones in Greenwich hospital census 1841, could this be him, why is he there ?
Are there hospital records available ? Can anyone see him elsewhere ?
Even 'can't see anything' replies would be helpful, I really struggle with searches and it would be great to know I'd done something right.
Thank you for reading.

Hi Jimbo
Perhaps though he had died by 1841?
There is a burial in 1826 at Woolwich (St Mary Magdalene)
Evan Samuel Jones
abode Trinity Street
buried 26 September
age 44 years
performed by H Fraser

which seems to tie in with the last baptism at Woolwich, 7 Dec 1825, of George Jones
Parents Evan + Mary
abode Trinity Street
father a Sawyer

Thank you very much Ian. I wouldn't have believed he'd died that far back. I knew Mary was a widow in 1851 census, and had looked for that possibility. I had pinned my faith in him being Evan Jones, pensioner, previously of 3rd Foot regiment and had died in 1848, but couldn't find his death.
In what searches do father's name and occupation appear, re George's baptism ? I presume you got an image or something. Was Trinity Street there then, or was that added by someone ?
I suppose it will take a lot of luck to uncover their marriage or origin.
Are you able to see if he was married before ? As one possible marriage was Tregaron or Caron, Cardiganshire, by licence, in 1816. That Evan Jones was a widower.
Thanks again.

Hi
It is probably going to be quite difficult to pin down the right marriage.
Yes, the extra info is from the images of the Woolwich baptism registers on ancestry
All of them give Evan's occupation as Sawyer
1815 baptism of Edward has abode as Church Street
1817 baptism of William, the abode is Green Hill
The next two have them at West Woolwich
And the baptisms of David in 1822 and George in 1825 give Trinity Street

There's another one, I think, at St Paul Deptford
Here we are extremely fortunate, as this parish gives fantastic extra info before 1813!
Baptized 3 May 1812
Jones Sarah, D of Evan + Mary, Giffin St, Sawyer, (when born) 10 April
(commas are mine!)

Sadly, Sarah possibly may have died in Woolwich as an infant?
Burial, Woolwich, 26 July 1814
Sarah Jones
abode Church Street
age 2 years 6 months
Although that age is three months out from the Deptford birth date, if her.

Is it possible that Evan was working in the dockyard at Deptford in 1812? If so, he might appear in the books at TNA

Hi Ian.
Thank you very much for this.
I notice 'Giffin Street' has appeared again, George's sister being born there.
Evan is totally new to me, I don't know if he was a dockyard sawyer.
I suppose this means a trip to Kew to look. Not too far though.
I am away later today(over the Severn to Wales) for a few days and out of computer reach.
You're very kind. Jim

Hello Again.
Does anyone have any ideas where his wife Mary Jones goes to after 1861 census.
I can't find her death or admission to workhouse. I would appreciate a look if you can.
Thanks
Jim

Thank you Ian for that.
I don't know why I can't seem to do a simple search properly.
I have now seen the death certificate and it's right age,81, but occupation shown as 'Widow of a Seaman ' .
Died 25th June 1865 at the Union Workhouse, informant was Wm. Sturton In attendance of address Trafalgar Road Greenwich.
If Wm Sturton is an official or doctor there , it could be her, but there's nothing to link her to Mary Jones, the Dairywoman.
One of her sons, David was a mariner, and her husband, a sawyer, maybe at the Naval Dockyard, but he'd been dead for approx 40 years.
Cause of death Natural Decay.Certified
Thanks

Ian, do you remember if you discounted this one for a reason.
March Qtr 1d 489 1868 Greenwich Age 85.
If not I might send off for death certificate again.
Thanks

Hi
I don't think I discounted it. Maybe didn't see it.
There's a burial at St Thomas Charlton, 14 January 1868, of Mary Jones, age 85. Which must be the lady whose death was registered in that quarter in Greenwich.
So hopefully you could check out the burial record first, before ordering another certificate. Very sorry indeed if the first one wasn't right.
Looks like you might have found the right one.
