Dead End - Mountford - Stoke/Staffs

Postby nasinclair » Tue Apr 04, 2017 8:19 pm

Hi All,

Just having a struggle with my family tree.

Great Grandma is Annie Mountford or Hannah Mountford (1899 to 1967, born in Stoke, died in St Asaph)

On her marriage certificate to Joseph Bates she puts her father as George Henry Mountford, on the 1911 census lives on Campbell Rd in Stoke with George Henry Mountford, in 1901 census lives on Campbell Rd, Stoke with George H Mountford. Baptism copy in 1899 in Stoke, parents of George Henry Mountford and Mary Jane Mountford.

So, ascertained that George Henry Mountford married Mary Jane Bennett in Stoke at St Peters in 1884, putting his father down as Thomas Mountford (Occupation-Blacksmith). He puts his age as 22, so born around the 1861/2 time. Address given by George Henry is Registry St, Stoke.

Problem being I cannot find any baptism or birth record for a George Henry at all in the right timeframe, so cannot move forward any further. On all the censuses mentioned above with Hannah present in household he lists himself as being born in Leek, Staffs.

Anybody who would be so kind as to help me shed some light on this?

Possible Birth registered

1860 4th qtr Leek 6b 199 (mothers maiden name Hollingshead)

George Mountford

Sometimes a middle name is added at baptism

OR
1862 2nd qtr Leek 6b 233 (No mothers maiden name - which might mean illegitimate and so made up a fathers name on marriage)

Could he be this person in the 1881 census?
Address:21, Registry Street, Stoke upon Trent,
Thomas Mountford Head Male 40 1841 Waggoner (Carter) Leek, Staffordshire,
Hannah Mountford Wife Female 42 1839 - Leek, Staffordshire,
George Mountford Son Single Male 20 1861 Painter Leek, Staffordshire,

If so, then in 1871 he appears as Henry Mountford with the same parents at Registry Street, Shelton, Stoke upon Trent.

There are 2 possible marriages between 1858-1862 (both taken from FreeBMD, so spouse not certain):
December qtr 1860
Mountford Thomas Leek 6b 368
Stubbs Hannah Leek 6b 368
or
December qtr 1861
MOUNTFORD Thomas Leek 6b 349
WAKEFIELD Hannah Leek 6b 349
married on 12 Nov 1861 at Norton in the Moors, Staffs

I think this has to be the first couple in 1861
Brown Edge, Endon Longsdon and Stanley, Leek, Staffordshire:
Thomas Mountford Head M M 23 1838 Coal Miner Leek, Staffordshire,
Hannah Mountford Wife M F 20 1841 - Leek, Staffordshire,
but are they the parents of George Henry?

Most likely marriage seems to be at Onecote cum Bradnop, Staffs
25 January 1863
Thomas Mountford, 21, Bachelor, Carter, residence Bradnop, father William Mountford, Miller
+
Hannah Plumb, 23, Spinster, residence Bradnop, father William Plumb, Labourer
after Banns
witnesses Joseph Plumb, Mary Ann Mountford
all signed except Hannah

Possible birth registration
Dec 1860 Leek 6b 210
Plumb, George Henry
mother -

Appears from that to be an illegitimate birth.
But, a possible baptism at Leek, with father named as Thomas, but as Plum?
Leek St Edward, 21 October 1860
George Henry
parents Thomas + Anna Plum
abode Bradnop
father a Laborer

Much better than my suggestion Ian!!
I had entertained the idea of an illegitimate birth prior to marriage, but then failed to follow it up because of finding Thomas and Hannah Stubbs. However, with Thomas' occupation as Carter etc, do you think the correct identification was made for 1871 & 1881 census? Sylvia

Hi
Yes, it looks like the right family in 1871 and 1881, and in fact Thomas and Hannah were still there much later.
Thomas's occupation in those early years fits with the marriage, and he may perhaps be the 19 year old in Bradnop in the 1861 census.
I don't think it's exactly proven that this is the right marriage for that couple, but the other possibilities don't seem to be leading anywhere.

But the headache for nasinclair will be, was Thomas Mountford actually George's father? Possibly, but at the moment there seem to be points both for and against.
