Metropolitan Police 1860s

Postby Whaley104 » Tue Apr 04, 2017 6:11 pm

Could anyone tell me how old someone had to Beto join the Met in the 1860s. I've found a newspaper article about my 3rd great uncle joining the Met in October 1863 but he'd have only been 13. I think it must have been 1868 but just want to check. Thank you.

My understanding of the age requirement for entry to the Metropolitan Police was 18 years and above from the outset. I have two ancestors who were policemen very early on in its history. You may find some information on your ancestor on the National Archives site.

Thank you. I think it must have been a Mis-print in the press.

The National Archives at Kew has extensive records of the Metropolitan Police, in the MEPO series, some of which can be downloaded free.

Thanks for the link Ian. It's a shame Edward had to retire because he was "worn out."

Thanks for the link Ian.... I searched for my ancestor (number of times grandfather) and his pension record appeared.. He has the same birth day as I have! and the form gives me his parents names.
Brilliant.
