Can anyone tell me what sort of uniform this is?
It's my 2nd great uncle and I've not come across any jobs that may include wearing uniforms.. he was born 1901, I'm not sure when this picture is from

Uniform help?

Postby brunes08 » Thu Mar 16, 2017 9:17 am

Conscription into the armed forces for the First World War didn't end until 1920. As your great uncle was born in 1901, it appears from the photo that he was called up as it looks like an army jacket he is wearing. Try looking for a service record for him. Although many records were destroyed in the Second World War, many do remain so you could be lucky.
Someone with eagle eyes may be able to gain more information from the buttons and the small badge on his upper arm.

It's a British Army uniform. My understanding is that people were conscripted at 18, though it might be a few weeks before they received their call-up papers asking them to report to the depot. I also understand that soldiers could not be sent abroad until after their 19th birthday, leaving plenty of time for training.

Unfortunately, I can see nothing else that helps me - though if you could just pop into a TARDIS and ask him to turn round somewhat, we'd be able to see the patch on his shoulder (which I think is a Divisional patch?) and the insignia on his shoulder-strap. Buttons are, generally, buttons.

The shoulder patch is slightly odd - as I said, I think these are Divisional patches but they seem, to my personal impression, to appear more in paintings designed to show off uniform aspects than in photos. Why this is, I've no idea - I could be wrong or maybe photos might often be taken before assignment to a Division (with a shoulder patch).

That would be about the only thing that might help with some sort of identification, but it might need to go to a specialist military forum such as the Great War Forum. Who might even say that it's some other sort of badge entirely.

Thank you for the help, I didn't even think about conscription, I'll see if I can find anything

I just wanted to say that as he was conscripted near the end of the war he may have stayed in the army for a few years so his service record could be held in the post 1921 records in Scotland.
