Can you decipher this marriage certificate?

Postby dsinclair » Sat Feb 18, 2017 1:48 pm

I'm researching my father's family. His father was a missionary in India & I'm now working back from him. The family seemed to be blacksmiths through the generations, this marriage certificate (08 October 1880) has my great grandfather's father almost illegible. Can you help me?
It may be he was illegitimate, or his father had died prior to his marriage.
Thank you.

That is a pretty poor quality scan - you can contact Scotland's People and ask for a better quality image, often they can supply one within a day or so.

But It appears to say:

James Tallance?
? Master
Reputed father (deceased)
and Helen Sinclair
Blacksmith's daughter

Not sure about the name - I'd want to look at a better image, but it certainly shows he was illegitimate.

I think it says James Tallance, Carter/Hawker,reputed father, deceased.
John Sinclair is Blacksmith Journeyman.
Isabella Young is Powerloom Weaver.
Her father is ? Young. Miner/Journeyman
Mother Jesse Young m.s.?
Of course I might be completely wrong. Completely boss eyed now.
