Florence B George(Herbert)/Gormley

Postby kgormley » Fri Feb 17, 2017 12:13 pm

I'm looking for Florence Beatrice George born c 1912.
She married Henry Gormley 20th Sept 1931 @uxbridge ro, spinster age 20 Florence Beatrice H? (Herbert) otherwise George, living at 24 Montague Rd Southall, no father is given, witness Alice Maud George.
Florence and Henry had 4children
Richard 1932 Marylebone
Francis 1933 Marylebone
Mary 1934 Uxbridge
Gwendoline 1941 Uxbridge
I know what happened to Francis and Mary (they stayed with Henry or his family) but I can't find what happened to Richard and Gwendoline.
Florence died 19th Sept 1943, age 31 in Uxbridge, her address is 16 Featherstone Rd Southold, the informant is A Andrews Aunt also at same address, occupation wife of Henry Gormley, although they had separated some time ago and Henry had another family by this time, I'm also doubtful about Gwendoline being his child as he was living with Ann Jones at the time of her birth and had children with her.

Richard Gormley born 11 Feb 1932 was in the Middlesex Colony (Harperbury Hospital) in Harper Lane, Shenley (St Albans). This was a mental hospital. His death seems to have been registered in St Albans in 1974.

It sounds as if you haven't got the birth certificate. I think you need that.

Thank you for info re: Richard.
Henry was living in Bath Somerset with Ann Jones and had children together at the time of gwendolines birth, Florence and Henry do not seem to have divorced and Ann and Henry do not seem to have married, they were catholic.
My grampy was Francis, he was aware Ann was not his real mother but didn't know his mother (Florence) or that she had died, Henry also may not have known she had died as he doesn't marry Ann.
Florence appears to carry on listing Henry as her husband even though they were not living together, so ordering the certificate may not help as I'm sure he will be listed as the father by Florence even though this may not be true.
One of Henry and Anns daughters is still alive and wasn't even aware her father had been married before.

This might possibly be the situation but you can't possibly be sure. The father's name could be blank with her name shown as Gormley formerly George.

However be that as it may, the value of the birth certificate is that you will have the exact date of birth which will help you to search for a death (if she died after 1969).

So fas as Florence is concerned, have you found her on the 1939 Register?

Thank you Ian that's amazing,
Its also possible harry (Henry) had two families on the go, he was in the army by then and that's why him and Ann came to bath, they argued alot because of his roving eye, maybe she was so suspicious knowing what had happened before, we will never know, but is entirely possible.

Hi
Henry isn't far away in 1939. Having said that, I haven't been able to find Florence in the 1939 Register. Nor the electoral register! There is another Florence Gormley in Southall, working at the Isolation Hospital, but she is still listed on electorals after the war.
And I haven't been able to work out exactly who Florence Beatrice is. If no father was named on her marriage certificate, and if Ada Fanny was her aunt, then you would think her mother would have been an older sister of Ada.
But the only one is Rose Elizabeth, who married William Deamer in 1907. And seems to have died in 1919 aged only 32.
Alice Maud George, the marriage witness, may have been the wife of one of Ada's brothers.
