Margot Grahame (clark)

Postby petersmee » Mon Feb 13, 2017 4:14 pm

Margot Grahame was a famous actress in the 1930s & 1940s.Wikipedia & IMdB say she was born Margaret Clark on 20 February 1911 in Canterbury , Kent.
She died 1 January 1982 in London.
I cannot find her birth record or who her parents were. Anyone able to solve my query?
Regards

Surprisingly few Clarks registered in Canterbury in 1911.

Have you eliminated this one :

Margo G Clarke Q1 1911 Canterbury 2A 931

Just checked this on GRO . The full name is Margo Grahame Clarke, mmn Thomas.

Bingo !

I can't find a Margo Clarke on the 1911 census in Canterbury , but this one is intriguing :

Sydney Graham 43 b Victoria, Australia
Gwen Graham 33 b Neath, South Wales
Graham Graham 2 b Marylebone
Marget Graham 1 month b Canterbury

Transcribed as above on Ancestry but I think it reads Margot and Graham has an e on the end. This may be a red herring - the birth certificate would help.

In August 1935, various US newspapers contained the identically worded report:

"The jinx that trails film romances in Hollywood today reached the married life of Margot Grahame and Francis Lister, English film couple. Miss Grahame confirmed reports that they had been separated for more than a month. Divorce has not been discussed but reconciliation was unlikely, she said. She will leave for England next week to bring her parents, Mr and Mrs Sydney Grahame, to Hollywood, where they will make their home".

Genius! Many thanks to Colin & Caro. I was getting very frustrated by so little info on Google & nothing I thought obvious on Ancestry. Many thanks, i think you've cracked it.

Well having had great help cracking the first part of my puzzle I thought the next bit should be easy but it doesn't seem to be. From the 1911 Census, Margaret Grahame (though transcribed as Marget Graham) is living with her parents, Sydney & Gwen Grahame in Canterbury, England. I am at a loss as to why her birth certificate is Margo G Clarke (1911 Q1 Canterbury 2a 931). I looked for her parents marriage as they had been married 5 years according to the 1911 census but I can't find it.
The Electoral Register for 1930 shows a Sydney & Gwendoline Grahame living in Maida Vale, so I think Gwen is a shorten version of Gwendoline (nor Gwenllian as I first thought). Gwendoline was born in Neath in circa 1878 based on 1911 Census. Her maiden name is Thomas based on Margo's birth. Sydney is from Victoria, Australia.
Any help with Sydney & Gwendoline's marriage or Gwendoline's birth would be much appreciated.

Trying to find Sydney Graham(e)'s birth in Victoria doesn't throw up obvious answers:
Family name: GRAHAM
Given names: James Sidney Boyd
Father's name: George
Mother's maiden name: Sydney (Boyd)
Reg. year:1866
Reg. no:23565

Family name: GRAHAM
Given names: William Sydney
Father's name: William John S
Mother's maiden name Flora Annie (Taylor)
Reg. year: 1875
Reg. no: 9061

I also tried GRAHAME and CLARK(E) with no better results.

Have you purchased a copy of Margot's birth certificate yet? And have you found a birth registration for her brother Graham Graham? I am left wondering under what name he may have been registered - as have not found him under Graham(e), Clark(e) or Thomas.

Hi, No I haven't purchased Margo's birth certificate. I am also having problems finding her brother under Graham, Grahame, Clark or Clarke! Census says born in Marylebone & aged 2 in 1911.
