I'm afraid this doesn't advance your search, but it may be of interest:
Obituary in the Yorkshire Gazette 29/7/1893
'Mr Richard Thornhill Thompson, aged 73, was employed for over 31 years at the Buckingham Works, Bishopshill, York.'
Google says this was the home of of Thomas Cooke & Sons, where factory methods of production were first applied to optical instruments, including camera lenses.
