The disappearing dancer

Postby ARainer » Sat Feb 04, 2017 4:42 pm

My wife's paternal great grandmother, Nellie Maria Keynes, was born in 1873 to her parents George Henry Keynes and Maria Keynes (nee Sessle - of German descent). Nellie had an illegitimate child, Grace Annie Harvey Keynes in 1893. On Grace's birth certificate, Nellie's occupation is shown as Ballet Dancer although that meant something completely different in those days. This is the last record we can find of Nellie. We have several press cuttings from just prior to Grace's birth about shows that Nellie performed in and have asked the Victoria & Albert museum if they had any further information but without success. We also have a record of Grace attending school but it seems she was registered by her grandfather, George. We have searched for a marriage, emigration and death record using different spellings without success and don't know where else to look. Can anyone help please?

Good grief!
What looks like a 1911 certified copy of Nellie's birth cert was for sale on eBay last year! Was it later relisted?
Certificate says that she was born 11 October 1873 at 68 Lynton Road, Bermondsey

And a letter, also from 1911, the year of her marriage - it's in German, a language I don't have any knowledge of -
Vendor says "Asked by British Majesty to grant the British Nelly Maria Keynes residence and protection in Germany."

Hi,
There is a family tree on Ancestry who reports that a Grace Annie Harvey Keynes b. ca 1891 married on 04 Aug 1912 at Christ Church, Camberwell, England to William Charles Brockfield. A copy of the marriage banns is attached to this record. Evidently, her grandfather George is listed as her "father." I hope this helps.

This is a rough translation of the German document. It appears to be a pass allowing her to work in Germany.

Translation
No. 28 (coat of arms)

This pass is under no circumstances valid for more than five years from the date of its exhibition. Then a new pass is to be obtained.

From his British Majestate
Extraordinary Ambassador and Plenipotentiary at His Majesty the German Emperor, King of Prussia, etc. Etc. Etc.

In this way, in the name of His Majesty, have asked and asked to address them,
Miss Nellie Maria Keynes
A British subject traveling on the European continent
Free, unimpeded passage, and to provide her with every help and protection she may need.

W.E. Goschen

Given to Berlin, the twentieth of February 1911
Age of the owner
37 years

Thank you so much for this information. I don't know what your interest is or how you made this search (especially on DE E-Bay!) but it does seem you may have broken down our brick wall. We can't thank you enough after several years of fruitless searching. We can now make further enquiries and, although unlikely, we could find we have cousins in Germany we have not known about before. Thanks again.
