No mothers maiden name on GRO indexes

Apologies if this question has been asked before but would a dash against the mothers maiden name on the new GRO search facility suggest an illegitimate birth?

It would appear so, because as she isn't married, she doesn't have a 'Maiden' name. Apparently a 'maiden' name is only used for married women, and a single woman wouldn't have a 'maiden' name! This differs from FreeBMD, where for illegitimate children, it shows the unmarried mothers surname!

Personally, I'd rather see the mothers surname, rather than the dash.

I prefer to see the dash as showing the mother's surname would not preclude a marriage between two people of the same surname, which was not uncommon. The dash is a way of confirming the illegitimacy so that you don't waste time looking for a marriage.
