Comyn

Postby morgaine2803 » Fri Feb 03, 2017 5:00 pm

I am trying to trace Harriett Ellen Comyn, according to her marriage certificateborn 1873, married on10 May 1896 Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. Apart from her death in 1900 she appears in no other record apart from a baptism record with the same name in 1889. The rumour in the family is that her father who is believed to be Henry Comyn ran off with an actress and joined the theatre, he died in 1880 at Saddlers Wells. There is also no trace of who we think is Harrietts Mother after 1871 census where she appeared as Ellen Comyn.

This is very tentative.

If we take the 1889 baptism as the starting point then Harriets parents were Henry Fitzwilliam and Ellen Augusta Comyn.

The 1871 census lists Henry and Ellen at St Mary's Terrace Paddington.

I cannot find a marriage between Henry and Ellen BUT in1853 there is a marriage between Henry Fitzwilliam Comyn and Rachel Eliza Senior on 18 April at St Botolph Aldgate London. Rachel does not pass away until 1880 so Henry would not have been free to marry Ellen.

Henry's parents from his christerning on the 29th Nov 1834 at St Pancras were Fitzwilliam and Harriet so I think it is safe to say that this is the correct Henry as his mother was named Harriet.

As Henry and Ellen seemed not to marry , and the lack of a birth reg for Harriet Ellen Comyn, it is possible she was registered in her Mother's name?

I have had a quick look at birth reg/baptisms for Ellen Augusta c.1836 and Harriet Ellen c.1873 ,both in ,and the only surname I have found to match both is Bennett, but a more rigourous search may produce other names.

That is as far as I have gone except that there is a death record for an Ellen Comyn in 1897 in Chelsea London that may be Ellen Augusta.

And......... the only census record I can find for either is for an Esther A Comyn in 1891. She is living in Park Walk chelsea,a widow, aged 54 and is an assistant to artists. This would tie in with Henry's occupation and perhaps the above death record.

Hopefully this will help you expand your search.

Following the finding by meekhcs that Henry may not have been free to marry Ellen because he was already married, there's an inquest report from St Pancras in the London Evening Standard 18/11/1880, which may confirm at least one child from that marriage.
Mr Henry Comyn, aged 46 (born about 1834), dresser to Mr Charles Warner, the actor, was injured when a loose item from the stage set of Romeo and Juliet, fell off and hit him on the head. Although it was a slight injury, infection set in and Henry died. "Mr Henry Comyn, a solicitor of 45 Shaftesbury Road, Hammersmith, identified the body of his father." Verdict was accidental death.

The death entry is Henry Comyn, aged 46, DecQ 1880, Pancras 1b 113.

Two sons for Henry and Rachel: Henry Ernest Fitzwilliam Comyn b1854, mother's maiden name Senior (he's probably the solicitor mentioned at Henry snr's inquest) MarQ 1854 Bromley 2a 193
Arthur James Comyn b1857 mmn Senior - MarQ 1857 Cuckfield Union 2b 137

Interestingly, in 1861, Henry Fitzwilliam Comyn was a farmer in Cuckfield, Sussex, with 242 acres, employing 5 men and a boy. Wife Rachel E was born 1832 in Norwich, plus two sons Henry EF and Arthur J, and two house servants. So quite a household, and a great change in circumstances in 1871, when Henry was living with Ellen.

This is an odd one, but the forenames and dates of birth are so close to what we're searching for, it's worth considering. Could it be a mis-hearing of 'Comyn'?
1881 Census, Castle Road, Marylebone, London
Ellen Corsign, aged 44 (b1837) widow, domestic, born London, Middlesex
Harriet E Corsign, aged 7 (b1874) daughter, born London, Middlesex
