I have to confess that I missed ianbee's first post about Sidmouth, but the Sidbury death was my favourite a couple of years ago but I ordered the certificate based on parameters that fitted but GRO said it was no good so did not send the cert. After years of searching you lose track a bit of what was previously rejected and why, hence cert now ordered without parameters so we will see what it reveals. I will obviously post the results next week

Good news.
A very speedy response from GRO (3 working days from order to receipt) has given me the certificate of the death of John Chard - Sidmouth 1855. It is the John I have been seeking.
No wonder that GRO previously said it did not match my criteria as:
John had changed to be a Fishmonger, no mention of marital status or even an address, other than Sidmouth.
The one and decisive thing that proves it was my John is that the informant is his granddaughter Sarah Ann McLeod (born Hawkins)
John had obviously moved to be near his daughter after Sarah died
Thanks for help
