Name of medal

Postby clarksclerks » Wed Jan 11, 2017 11:29 pm

Can anyone identify the name of the medal in the attached image? It is from the Will of Israel Shute, born in Devon in 1820 and died in Fort William Bengal 1850, where he was a staff serjeant with the town mayor's department. I can't find an army record for him and I'm interested in when he might have gone to India.

I cannot see any attachment to the post above, however I looked at the image on findmypast.

It is the Ghuznee Medal, awarded in the ist Afghan War.

There is also another medal which has Ghuznee in its title
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candahar, ... abul_Medal Wikipedia

He appears to have been in the Bengal Army.

Fot tracing a soldier in the Bengal Army see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page of that name
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Bengal_Army
In particular, you would probably be able to trace him in the records called “Registers of Bengal Army European soldiers" which are at the British Library, London and also available on FamilySearch microfilm, which can be ordered and viewed at FamilySearch Centre/Family History Centre (run by the Mormon Church), see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/FamilySearch_Centres
Some of the larger Centres may hold these records on site, so check.

Cheers
