Edith Jones, born 1909

Postby pforkes » Tue Jan 10, 2017 7:35 am

Edith Jones is my first cousin, once removed.

She was born on 7th September 1909 at 12 Salop Street, Bilston, Staffordshire.
The 1911 census shows her as living at home with her parents at 10 Salop Street, Bilston, Staffordshire.

Those are the only two records that I can find for her.

Can anyone help me find out what happened to her?

Thanks.

Wow! Thank you.

May I ask, what was the process that you went through to determine this? What was the first piece of information that you looked for?

I am hoping that if I can learn the methods used by other people that I will also be able to use them and then be able to improve my research.

Again, thank you. In the next few minutes I will be sending off for the birth, marriage and death certificates. I plan on getting back to you in a few weeks when they arrive.

Hi
As you gave Edith's date of birth, I hoped that she lived past 1969 when those dates appear in the death indexes. So they were my first port of call.
Knowing that her family were in Nottinghamshire, the Cooke death stood out and so I looked for a possible marriage of an Edith Jones to a Cooke.
The arrival of the 1939 Register means that we can now use that in the same way. Looking for an Edith born 7 Sep 1909.
On this occasion the two sources came together nicely.
A bit of extra evidence that the 1939 Register family relates to that 1929 marriage -
Birth, 1930 Basford 7b 406
Cooke, George
mother's maiden surname - Jones
Of course only the marriage cert can confirm everything for sure.

I did not think that I knew that her family were in Nottinghamshire (she came from Bilston, in Staffordshire).

Also, the transcription of the 1939 register shows that Albert Cooke is "Widowed", but it does not seem to show that in the original. I guess an "m" was misread as a "w", plus, since they were married when he was 19, it would be , well, interesting.

Electoral registers seem to suggest they were in Notts.
1921 has George and Naomi Jones listed at 4 Harcourt Street, Kirkby in Ashfield
George goes off them after 1922, so possible death
Dec 1922 Basford 7b 168
Jones, George
age 51
Was he actually George Edward?

By 1926, at 1 Council Houses, Harcourt Street
Jones, Naomi
Jones, Ernest
Jones, James
The two males were parliamentary voters only there. James Jones has a vote in local elections as well in 1927. I take it James is Naomi's son in law, whose birth you are seeking.

Did Naomi remarry?
Sep 1927 Basford 7b 602
Chatband, John R.
Jones, Naomi

Death, June 1931 Nottingham 7b 261
Chatband, Naomi
age 54

Yes, Albert Cooke is definitely married on the 1939 Register! Seen that kind of mistranscription quite a few times now.

Which website (I am presuming that you are using a website) are you using to find the Electoral Registers?

Hi
Findmypast, England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1832-1932
Jones is a difficult name for this database. If you are looking for your James Jones it will find any James and any Jones on the same page (James Jones = 51,615 results)
You need to select Kirkby in Ashfield as polling district or place
Reduce the years searched, at most, say, 1922 +/- 10

Of course the name Naomi is a godsend here.
1928 electoral register finds Naomi Chatband and John Robert Chatband at 21 Harcourt Street. Along with Ernest Jones. The 1927 register had Naomi Jones, Ernest Jones and James Jones at number 21.
So Naomi has remarried but was still living at the same address, and indeed this is the address given on that marriage certificate of yours (other thread)
I believe that 21 Harcourt Street and "1 Council Houses" (1926) are probably the same address.

Well, I spent a part of my afternoon and most of my evening following up on your findings and I am inclined to believe that you are right!

I have ordered: the death certificate for George Jones (Basford, 1922); the marriage certificate for Naomi Jones to John Robert Chatband (1927); and the death certificate for Naomi Chatband (in 1931).

Certificates from the GRO take anything from 14 to 48 days to arrive here in Las Vegas (though all other mail takes precisely FIVE days to get here!). They should be here sometime in February and I will let you know what they tell me. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

From the 1939 Register, it would appear that John Robert Chatband was born on 22nd February 1883 and he died about March 1952. He also appears to have married Florence Emma Downes (who died before he married Naomi Jones in 1927) and they had a son together - John R Chatband on 23rd December 1911.
