Finding the birth record of someone whose surname is Jones.

Postby pforkes » Tue Jan 10, 2017 7:30 am

My great aunt married a gentleman named George Edward Jones. Their eldest daughter was Alice Maud Jones, born in 1900 in Bilston in Staffordshire. She married James Jones on 22 Dec 1926 in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire .

James Jones died on 6 Sep 1964 and from his death certificate I learned that he was born on 22 Aug 1885, but I do not know where, and I do not know the names of his parents.

So summarizing about James Jones:
* He was born on 22 Aug 1885.
* He was married on 22 Dec 1926 in Kirkby in Ashfield, Notts.
* He died on 6 Sep 1964 Victoria Hospital, Mansfield, Notts.

I also know that (according to the 1939 register) that he was living at 14 Sherwood Place,Nuncargate,East Kirkby, Kirkby-in-Ashfield U.D., Nottinghamshire with his wife and three others (who I believe were three sons) where he was a “Collier Detailer (Below)”

What I am trying to find out is where was he born?

There are two options to do this:
1. I can wait 10 years, or so, and hope that someone else finds him and makes the record public in their tree. (Risky and I do not want to wait that long.)
2. I could buy the birth record of every James Jones born in the Jul-Sep quarter of 1885 and hope that his birth was reported before the end of the quarter. (This option is too expensive.)
3. Some other option that I have not thought of yet, that is neither too long nor too expensive.

His wife was born in Bilston, in Staffordshire and they were married in Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire (where they both died). This does not help me to learn where his was born.

You don't know the names of James Jones' parents; have you not got his marriage certificate to Alice Maud? Hopefully, it would at least give you his father's name, and maybe the witnesses names could help too. If you want to send for it, the GRO ref is DQ1926, Basford, 7b 441.

There's no James Jones (that is, with no middle name) born in the Sept/Dec quarters of 1885 in Notts. Just for interest, a colliery dataler was an underground workman paid by the day.

I have attached a copy of the marriage record.

It shows that Ernest Jones (possibly his brother) and her mother (Naomi) were the witnesses and that his father (John Jones) was a miner.

In your post, you give the birth year for James as 1885 - the year given in the 1939 Register, informant not known, and confirmed by his death cert, for which he didn't provide the information. But his marriage certificate shows his age as 31 in 1926, which would make his birth year 1895. Did he shave ten years off for his marriage, then admit the truth later? Or could the marriage age be correct, and the two other sources wrong? I mention it because a difference of 10 years affects searches.

That 10 year age difference is interesting. I am believing that the marriage certificate os the one that is in error.

There was a John H Jones, 30, Coalminer Hewer, with wife, Sarah 27, son James 3, and daughter Sophia 2 at Albert Street, Skegby, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England in 1901. I couldn't find any other matches. http://search.findmypast.com/record?id= ... 0017452456

A John Henry Jones, 26, son of Joseph, married Sarah Ann Simpson, 29, 3 Aug 1892 at St. John Worksop. http://freereg2.freereg.org.uk/

They had a son, James, born 24 Sep 1897 and baptized 22 Oct 1897 at St. Andrew Skegby.
James was followed by Sophia born 29 Jan 1899 and baptized 17 Mar 1899 at the same place.

There was also a Harry Ernest Jones, born 29 Oct 1892, to John Henry & Clara (which might be a clerical error) and baptized 16 Feb 1894 at St. Mary Nottingham. http://freereg2.freereg.org.uk/

Any chance this could be them?

The 1939 Register gives his date of birth as 22nd August, 1885.

I know that he is a miner, so he will be from a mining area (presumable where the mines are closing down, in the early part of the 20th century) or he is from Nottinghamshire.

22nd August is kind of in the middle of the Jul-Sep quarter.

So, a search in the G.R.O. for "John Jones" born in 1885 Jul-Sep really only shows up one person from a mining area - 1885  S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 549 mother's maiden name "Lloyd". In case he was registered in the Oct-Dec quarter of 1885 I checked there as well, and nothing really jumped out

The Wolverhampton/Dudley/Bilston area was a mining area that was slowing down at the beginning of the 20th century, so this is the one that I will be putting my money on.
